I saw a man (who I believe is the brother of the six string devil botherer from the boring old band Queen) on tele talking about Air-Fix. This gave me the idea to invent a new range of Traditional Irish Musical Instrument Kit designs for Air-Fix. I have in mind the people who have better model making talents then musical ones, but none the less would like to appear to be sitting in at sessions. Or would like to tastefully & cheaply decorate their houses with plastic Hibernian musical models hanging from the ceiling on wires.
The simplest (the Messerschmitt 109 if you like) is obviously a whistle (five parts in the kit) and the hardest (Sunderland Flying Boat) is the Uillean Pipes kit which consists of 95 parts. I’ve included fiddle, tenor banjo, ‘zouk, bodhran and box in the series. I haven’t bothered with the Irish flute as most flutes I see at sessions look like they’ve been made from an Air-Fix kit already. Each kit will come complete with (recreational) glue and appropriate paints. I hope the bodhran kit will have a nice decal reading “Guinness” and the box model with moving buttons with an authentic clacky sound. There could also be scaled down kits for children and small people to pose with.
If Air-Fix were not interested I expect Lego would be. Instruments would be almost like the real thing constructed from Lego bricks. And you could make accessory kits like a Pint of Guinness, a fiddle chin rest or instrument cases.
In some ways playing Trad Irish music makes us all Hornby Dublo collectors I guess…
we had llig leachim on about giants last week now you're on about airfix kits...are ye all f***in' gone stark mad ? are ye writing scripts for spongewbobsquarepants or have you overdosed on some drugs or what\ ? f.f.sake !!
Hmm.. Busted. I loved setting up little tableaux with the kids' Playmobil people. Never got the complete Irish Pub set (comes with bodhran and box, with tiny pints AND gushy tourist spectators), but we always had enough fiddles and flutes. Only one guitar, though. Pity. The little people always tended to topple off their chairs as time went on. And they would litter the floor with teeny little cigarette butts. With the kids grown and on their own, I thought about selling the whole bit off at the last garage sale, but couldn't bring myself to part with them. They may behave badly, but they are like old friends.
Spongebob already has featured Irish music and he appears on a range of not very musical instuments , including a pink flying V uke if you would like to buy one.
Not really , its the fumes from the tube of airfix adesive glue I accidently inhailed while trying to glue the bomb door hatch of an Airfix Flying Fortress to Hagrid's broken trousers zip , to preserve decency etc. that caused my mind to play tricks on me
From what I recall of making a pair of wings (I never got past the wings), the 'glue' you're speaking of was 'dope'. Not surprised the fumes bring back pleasurable memories...
I used to love my model airplanes, someday when I retire I will get back to building them. My favorite was my model of a Ford Trimotor, fitted with skis for snow landings, complete with little arctic explorers and a dog sled.
I think it led to the tune in / turn on / drop out culture of the
late sixties / early 70's. It started with childhood glue sniffing
(aka "building model airplanes"). Then it moved on to ganja
and lsd. Those were the days; I stayed away from the lsd though.
Lego are doing a musician series - out end Nov, I believe. I've seen photos of Lego Blur, Lego Bowie and Lego Iggy Pop . . .I look forward to Lego Kevin Burke, Lego Chieftans . . . Actually having seen the photos of Lego Blur, Bowie and Iggy Pop, I'm rather hoping it's a wind-up.

Yes, the mention of the fumes of the glue *does* bring back pleasurable memories...
