I've heard loads about Sonny but never heard him play, never even seen a picture of him! Anyone have any info, tracks ,photos etc of him? Would be much appreciated.
i am a b/c player who considers the little i've heard of sonny brogan's ornamentation style (or absence thereof) to be the loveliest b/c style and a model of what i'd like my own style to be like.
there are several tracks of sonny brogan's playing on a smithsonian folkways cassette box compiled by reg hall. i don't have the title of it. the tape also includes aughrim slopes or ballinakil players tracks. reg hall wrote extremely interesting and detailed notes for this package, including notes about sonny brogan.
hall noted among other things (i'm going on memory here) that brogan played for sean o'riada's music for the Abbey's production of "Song of the Anvil." no clue whether he recorded any o'riada stuff.....
the b/c box player and composer paddy "with a pulse" o'brien of county offaly and currently of minneapolis and the band Chulrua, has written that he considered sonny brogan a very big influence (along with tony macmahon and joe cooley) . paddy knows a great deal about sonny brogan....
the b/c box and concertina player john williams of boston also knows a great deal about sonny brogan and if memory serves, either knew him or knew his style through williams' own father, who knew him.
both john williams and paddy "with a pulse" o'brien do sound to me like they have been influenced by sonny brogan....
