What is the relationship on The Session between a tune and an album/recording? I see tunes that are listed on a recording on The Session, but when I look up that tune individually the album is not listed in the cross references. How is this supposed to get done?
Are you saying that the link only goes in one direction? A recording links to a tune that's on it, but the tune doesn't link back to the recording? That would be very surprising.
My guess is that this is how the site works:
When someone adds a recording (or edits the contents of a recording they've added, any tune title that exactly matches an existing tune (or one of its alternate titles), that tune title is linked with some tune having that title among its titles (presumably giving priority to the earliest one in the database if there's more than one).
When someone adds a tune or an alternative title to a tune, if it exactly matches a tune title on an existing recording, it links with that recording.
Minor variants in spelling and punctuation that are not explicitly entered as alternatives are not linked. Recordings get linked to the earliest tune with the same title, not necessarily the same tune. Tunes get linked to recordings containing tunes that have the same, or an alternate, title.
If a recording has a tune that is not linked at all, but the tune is in the database, you can establish a link by adding its title as an alternative title to the correct tune it should link to.
If a recording fails to link to a tune because the person who entered the recording made a typo or other careless error, it would be better to e-mail the person who entered it and ask them to correct it.
The situation is also compounded by the fact that in Irish folk music not only may one tune may have several different titles (as Gary has pointed out) but a title may be applied to more than one tune.
