Er, no, 'Dún na nGall' does not mean Donegal. The modern town's name is an Anglicisation. 'Dún na nGall' means 'fort of the foreigners', though some have it as 'fort of the strangers'.
Nevertheless, a fair translation of the song's Irish title would be 'Old Donegal'.
Herself is a descendent of the smallest Irish Clans which was based in County Donegal. For the last two hundred years though it seems that many of her family moved to County Mayo, Dublin and of course that most recent of Ireland's counties, County Cook which contains Chicago!
That phrase in on her county flag which gets flown a couple times a year
Oh, DD, I'm not sure what point you're trying to prove, but I'm leaving you to it (and I don't think you've really understood my gallowglass point). The last post has just been trumpeted.
I don't think it has been trumpted yet, floss.
Tell me about the gallowglass point, because I think you are way off mark there, but....I stand to be corrected. very interesting my friend.
Sean dun na Ngall
Sean dun na Ngall
What does this translate to in English? I just listened to a haunting vocal of this on Youtube and would appreciate a translation. Thank you.

Re: Sean dun na Ngall
Could it be Old Donegal?
I don't know Irish, it's just a guess.

Re: Sean dun na Ngall
That would be my understanding anyway.
'sean' means 'old', and 'Dún na nGall' means Donegal...

Re: Sean dun na Ngall
Following up my earlier post. 'Dún na nGall' most assuredly *is* Donegal. Donegal is also frequently referred to as "Tír Chonaill" in Irish.
Sean Dún na nGall means 'Old Donegal', unless there's some context I'm missing...
