Yes folks, with special thanks to Joe Duffy,, Frankie Gavin and Tony MacMahon are playing together at the Ennis Trad Fest. I presume Alec Finn isn't providing accompaniment
Well RP, I don't either, in fact, perhaps they were made for each other.
However, I do have a problem with someone of Tony MacMahon's standing, slagging off a highly respected musician like Alec, live on the radio.
Although I must admit, I did love the irony of him strongly hinting that in his opinion, Alec's Bouzouki wasn't worthy of playing Irish Music, when he himself in fact plays such a Johnny come lately instrument, as an Accordion!
The words foot & shot immediately sprang to mind!
I have no doubt too, that all the Irish American musicians also loved hearing Tony hint that Alec, because he wasn't actually born in Ireland, probably shouldn't really be playing Irish Music in the first place.
Thankfully, Alec being the bigger man & the mighty Gentleman he is, didn't rise to any of Tony's nonsense.
Too true Ptarmigan. I think it's a real shame when such great players go bad. As well as the Alec Finn incident I also found the clip of MacMahon castigating Eileen Ivers on Irish TV left a really bad taste in the mouth. Extreme opinions are or thing but being publicly rude to respected players is a real shame.
Well said ptarmy
I did think about maybe they could form a trio with Mr Tansey on the flute both the concert and the post match interview worth a listern
..and wasn't the bodhran alleged to have been introduced by Peter Kennedy of the English Folk and Dance Society? ....okay, I know, I've got my coat and I'm out the door already!
fedorastain, I thought the smart money was on the Bodhran being developed in Ireland, thanks to the Sally Army wandering around Ireland with their Tambourines?
Isn't this why a lot of the early Bodhrans had those bells around the rim?
Of course drums like that have been developed & played by most civilisations, even the good old neanderthal would have probably used them to accompany the flutes we now know they played, so I reckon, all the Irish can really claim is their Irish word for them, nothing more!
