See if you can think of any other reasons why it only got 5 responses

You'll have to excuse Michael as he lives in Scotland where they only sell meat pies on Thursdays (see recent thread).

Try this database - lots of tunes with chords (but not just Irish):

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

At the same time the advice in the previous thread to use your ears was good advice. If you want to play guitar in sessions then you have to be able to hear the changes in the tune and tailor your accompaniment to how the melody players are playing the tune. You have to be able to react and you can't do that if you just have set chords for set tunes.

Also accompaniment is not exactly rocket science and for most tunes is relatively straight forward. If you want to use predetermined chords as a starting point then that's all fine and well but you should move beyond it. Anyway your biog says you have been playing flute for 12 years and guitar for longer. You shouldn't really need the chords.

To go to the second screen, click on the word "Next" near
the lower right corner of the page. But you knew that, didn't
you Kess?

Whatever you do, don't get into the bad habit of using a capo. It is a certainty that the next tune is in a different key.

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

Yes, indeed!
You don't need 'the chords'.
There's no such thing.
If you start thinking, "Oh! These are THE chords to Rip the Calico and Rakish Paddy" you'll never be able to think outside the box.
And if you hear someone doing a different arrangement you'll start thinking is sounds wrong.
There are no chords (i.e. the right ones) for any trad tune (not like there ARE the right chords for e.g. Hey Jude, I Left My Heart In San Francisco, I Predict A Riot).
Accompaniment in this music is variable and busked, organic and moving.
I rarely play the same backing twice to any trad tune, it's made up on the fly by submerging yourself in the tune you and the others are playing and inventing appropriate stuff as you go.
This is one reason why only one backer at a time is good.

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

here are a couple sites I've found with tunes with chords:

http://www.thursdaycontra.com/~spuds/TunesJigs.html

and

http://www.mne.psu.edu/lamancusa/tunes.htm#celtic

I can relate to your request -- as a box player, I don't so much need the chords but it is handy to have them for guitar or piano playing friends who appreciate the head start...

It's a lot easier to get a friend to back you up if you can give them something to work with.

One of the ways people learn to use their ears is to learn a few things by rote and then start extrapolating.

Just choose the tune type at the bottom of the page and then choose your tune, each one includes sheet music + chords

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

But as mentioned above, dont just follow those chords because they are only one possible arrangement, its best to make up your own and see which ones you like best

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

Then there is the point that whilst there is no one "right" chordal arrangement there are certainly plenty of wrong ones and there is no guarantee that what you will see in print or online is at all appropriate.

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

Kess,

Chord choices to Irish tunes are generally more open in contrast to other styles such as bluegrass where the chords are more fixed. If you are the only musician comping a melody instrument then you are much more free with your chord choices. If two or more musicians are comping an Irish tune then it's best if the chords are fixed. Some Irish tune books have chords included but the chord choices may not be the only ones possible.

When choosing chords for Irish tunes it's important to know the key/mode, what chords work in the key/mode and the relationships between the chords. For example, if you are comping a tune in D major (Ionian mode) then look at the chords that are built on each scale degree of the Dmajor scale: Dmaj em f#m Gmaj Amaj bm c#dim. In general chords built on the 1st, 4th and 5th scale degrees will have the strongest relationships to each other regardless of key. So, if you are comping a tune in Dmajor that you've never heard before Dmaj, Gmaj and Amaj are good bets. They are the chords built on the 1st, 4th and 5th scale degrees of the Dmajor scale or the I, IV and V chords. I, IV and V chords are good bets regardless of the key/mode.

A little music theroy goes a long way

take care Dzia Dzia

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

In Dorian mode use I and VII. These roman numerals are not recognized by my theory teacher but they work

# Posted on October 7th 2009 by Earl Cameron

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

That's right Earl, I and VII chords work for Dorian and Mixolydian modes.

I know, some music theory guys think it's weird to use roman numerals on other modes besides major and minor. But they do work with all modes.

Re: Any good websites that have the chords to loads of tunes?

Click on my user name, and you will find a little essay I wrote on getting started as an accompanist, with some information that can help you figure out what chords work where.
I don't know any websites that could help you, as I am pretty computer illiterate (I am amazed I ever stumbled on this site). A lot of the tune books out there now have guitar chords, and can give you some ideas. But I have found that I generally only get an idea here and there from those books, much of what I learned I worked out myself, or learned by sitting across from an experienced accompanist at a session, and watching and listening to what they did.
I am afraid, Kess, that on this website, while plenty of us are willing to help teach you how to fish, no one is just going to hand you those fish without there being some work involved!
Enjoy!
