What is the general ethos on this forum about commercial postings?
I am a sometime contributor to the Chiff and Fipple Forum for whistle players (althought there are associated forums for all the other genera of instruments too). Sensible and non-combative self-promotion on a periodic basis is tolerated by the moderators. This has proven to be a good way of advertising ones wares for one like me who makes whistles as a hobby.
BTW - posted here, as the link to the moderator to whom this thread should be directed, doesn't work!
i would prefer not to see blatent ads in the discussions area.
if its something new exciting and will benefit everyone, then maybe as a one off, but not periodic repeats
my preference is for putting it in your profile.
when you contribute in discussions, people can then see all your sales patter and links just by clicking on your username.
you could of course just periodically add a link to your website, in the *links* section. some people do this.
In the past, discussions which have been posted as obvious ads have been deleted by the webmaster, and in one or two extreme cases the perpetrator may have been barred permanently.
I've seen posts of a mildly commercial nature on this board, but only occasionally. Recently, there was an announcement that another whistle maker was separating from his previous venture to make his product under his own name. That posting - I won't be more specific, to avoid repeating the commercial posting! - was pretty much a direct solicitation of business, and nobody seemed to mind too much.
However, I think Rumpole has hit it square: ads don't really belong in the discussion area. If someone asks about whistle makers, I don't see why you shouldn't mention your product (although if someone else were to mention it, it would probably carry more weight), and you should certainly post a link (but just once, they don't go away) and put some information in your profile, but people read the discussions for the discussions, not for ads.
Thank you very much for the information Random Notes, I have just listed my website http://www.mcknowall.com on the musical instruments page.
There is a very fine line between rampant commercialism and providing people with information on where they can obtain top quality bodhrans and tippers.
I think if you do a search on 'choonz' in discussions where some guys tried to frankly hype there album to mostly derision you see where the line is crossed. Here I would not mind mc trying to foist his muted beaters on the unsuspecting
There are some who might sell their immortal soul for an earth-shattering improvement in their playing, but it'd likely be a one-off. Of course, if some sharp-dressin' smooth talker makes such an offer, then the whole theistic-atheistic debate grinds to a halt, and the really sharp ones would respectfully decline, and stay mediocre players. Right?
