My wife has taken a job in St. Louis, and we'll be moving there in a few weeks. I myself play and sing primarily traditional music from Ireland and New England on mandolin, octave mandolin, and Irish tenor banjo. The wife and I also enjoy set dancing, and contra dancing.
I was hoping that some of the members here in that area could suggest some sessions, ceili's and other dances in the area. Also if there's anyone looking for someone like me to join their band, or start one with me you can find my email on my website below, where you can also listen to what I've been up to.
Hi Ed - I live in St. Louis - There is live Irish trad 7 nights a week at McGurk's Irish Pub in the Soulard section of the City. You will also want to check out St. Louis Irish Arts at http://www.slia.org/home.html I found my Irish fiddle teacher via St Louis Irish Arts. You may also be interested in the programs of The Folk School at http://www.folk-school.com/ I can be of no help re: contra dancing - sorry. Also I don't have school age children so I don't have much to say about schools. I live in the City myself being not much in favor of the 'burbs. Best of luck to you and your family as you plan your move.
We have a lot of stuff going on, and you should find plenty to do. As Mary said, McGurk's is our mecca and we get people from all over. In a burb called Webster Groves, there is an acoustic music shop called "Music Folk". There is an open Irish session there on Wednesday nights from 7-9. Many of us then go onto Riley's pub on Arsenal in the city and go until midnight. There is a Tionol in the spring and that's a great event.
There are contra dances at the Monday Club in Webster Groves almost weekly. You'll find more about it at www.folkfire.org, which lists all the cultural goings-on in the area. If you get involved at the Folk School, you'll run into many of them there.
Look forward to meeting you some day. Hard to talk about school systems and best places to live without knowing more about you, and what you call reasonable.
Reminds me of the story Mark Twain tells of the little girl whose family was moving to Missouri. When it came time to leave, the little girl ran out in front of the house and said,
"Good-bye, house, I'm going to Missouri!"
"Good-bye, green grass, I'm going to Missouri!"
"Good-bye, God, I'm going to Missouri!"
At this point he corrected himself and said the little girl never did say, "Good-bye, God, I'm going to Missouri!"

Also, if anyone has any insights into reasonably priced neighborhoods and towns with decent school systems, that information would be welcome as well.
Thanks, Ed.

"I might be moving to Missouri soon -
Just to raise me up a crop of mandolin strings..."
Good luck out there.
