And on the same principle;
95% of all folklore is made up by folk-musicians as they tune their instruments between songs and tunes.
Well, that's what Jeff Warner said last night, anyway.
Re: 95% of statistics are made up by statisticians.
That figures. It is the time when folk-musicians are probably most on the ball and maybe in states of heightened consciousness. For other people it may be the pub quiz or taking part in the Charge of the Light Brigade in a computer game.
Re: 95% of statistics are made up by statisticians.
Pete, I don't know what your sessions are like in N. London, but down here it's 99% tunes and 1% catching your breath and remembering that this is still just planet earth not heaven, in between the tunes. No joking. Must be because we're nearer the equator down here that things get so hot.
Re: 95% of statistics are made up by statisticians.
I was in there recently, and they certainly get high numbers cramming into that front bar- the players can hardly breathe for all the punters sitting on their laps, yet still manage to play mighty stuff. Danny, did they ever try having the music in the big bar at the back?
Re: 95% of statistics are made up by statisticians.
This is probably because real figures are almost invariably an embarrassing nightmare.
For example, weight in pounds - too many; real hours spent working - too few; number of partners / pints per night / previous convictions - too many *or* too few, depending on whom someone is anxious to impress. Same with income of course, depending on whether it is desired to flash it or hide it. And so on. Blameless objective reality is seen as an active and malignant snake in the grass, to be chopped up and disposed of as thoroughly and as fast as possible.
Which is an instinctive reaction of governments as well as individuals. It probably takes a great deal of moral effort *not* to persist in such a reaction. I say "probably", because I do not claim great experience of this kind of moral high ground...

Y'know what's sad? The science of probability and statisitcs is a very powerful tool, but it's been so badly abused that it gets no respect and nobody believes it twhen it's used to tell the truth. Other things are also sad. This is just one.

Re: 95% of statistics are made up by statisticians.
When I was last in London there was one Circle.
I suppose now there may be many Circles, as in Dante's Inferno.
Maybe Sarf London gets the high numbers.

figures never lie. Liars figure. So that lets you know what I think about statisticians..particularly ones that work for politcal pollsters

Re: 95% of statistics are made up by statisticians.
I could have posted this on the other post today about ITM, sex and porn
Most truths are so naked that people feel sorry for them and cover them up, at least a little bit.

Re: 95% of statistics are made up by statisticians.
90% of the people citing statistics are making them up on the spot (and no, I am not in the 10% remaining when I make this statement).

And here I thought it was 95% of statistics are made up of statisticians. That's what I get for trying to think.
