I recently compared learning “this” music by playing along to recordings as rather like learning about “how’s-your-father” by only watching porn movies. In other words you have to actually be in a room with other breathing musicians (or have 1:1 lessons) to pick up on the true ever changing nature of it. Learning along with records means you just get that one off version entrenched in your head and have trouble adapting when the version at your friendly local session facilitates a different groove &/or backing harmony.
It's not what you do, recordings and so on, it's this skill here, the adapting.
That's the key to the music. Everybody's got a slightly different version, everywhere you go. Some of them are radically different from what your local considers the tune to be.
This is OK and it's one of the wonderful things about the music.
Being able to adapt your playing on the fly to other musicians is the joy and magic, it's one of the key things here. It's how we make magic.
Well, that and rhinestone studded clothing and albino tigers.

Dave, I am so glad that have shared with us, the other uses to which you put your hand(s). At least now we know they are, at those times, out of harms way and not *perpetually* wrecking every session going
You need a short, sharp shock. Hire a music stand called Dorothy for a night...(they're under 'one-night stands' in the 'phone book). She will pin you down while you're half asleep, screaming at you to remember her name. The ensuing trauma will give you a life-long phobia for Dots, but might just get your mind off porn for a while...
I like this analogy. It makes me realise that it's the same dirty feeling I get when I play the Mouth of Tobique *exactly* like Sharon Shannon does on the recording as I get when I copy some of the moves I've seen the pros do on the internet with my girlfriend.
yhaalhouse - the restaurant, or Tamil cafe in Tooting - yes I know the one - just next to the station, and across the road from South London Motorcycles, where I recently bought my Honda CG125 with 24 miles on the clock - no joking - anyway - is it a good eatery?
Thanx, now I have a new outlook on making beautiful music together. The analogy can be said for sessions that play fast tunes all night; all orgasm and no foreplay. Maybe that's the noodling bit.
I would comment more but I have to go mow the grass.
Rearrange the letters of ITM, and you get TMI, which stands for TOO MUCH INFORMATION, thank you very much, Mr. Yhaalhouse. Some analogies are best left unsaid, and some mental images unexplored.
Rook, you're right- there does seem to be some relationship between them. In younger days, it was all sex, and a little Irish music. These days, it's all Irish music and...what was that other thing again?

Yhaalhouse is amazing (as most Tamil places are) but you have to have a good chilli resistance to appreciate Tamil cuisine!
Try "Saturday Special": Crab & squid & prawn curry, egg fried rice, fried fish (about six quid) ...
or special noodles with a mutton curry side...
or a vegetable khottu with a dhal on the side...
or a masala dosa...
or "Friday Special": Thaali (various vegetable dishes and a pile of rice)
Yum yum! But as with most food best eaten after a session!
"ITM", Sex, Recordings, Porn...
"ITM", Sex, Recordings, Porn...

An attention grabbing headline followed by a truism. Are you, by any chance, trying to get this on digg?

Hooray! "These are a few of my favorite things..." What a great title! Sounds like a memoir, let me know when it's done, I'll buy a copy.

Key word: "adapting"

I suppose an accurate analogy. Perhaps there are better.

Re: "ITM", Sex, Recordings, Porn...
A very astute observation Yhaal. (is that like the Southern American expression Y'all?) Probably not..
After all, sex and/or music with another person is very special. However, with multiple people it can be mind blowing!

So in this analogy, is there any significance in bodhran players sitting hunched with their right hand making rapid up and down movements?
Remember this is a family site when you answer.

I have always noticed, as no doubt the rest of you have, that SEX and ITM are virtually inseperable.
One has only to experience the raw untamed eroticism of the banjo, and, well, --- there you are.
Have a grand day, all.

Good timing with that one, for me anyway -

Gotta go rosin my bow now, look for the screen-cleaning bill in the mail.
