Shetland to Aoteoroa

Shetland to Aoteoroa

I recently posted a photograph of Shetland shepherds with instruments who emigrated to the Campbell Islands at the turn of the 1900's. Are there any Shetlanders here who talk about their forebears heading out that way (Deep South NZ) and would there be much interest in how the Shetlands have shaped NZ culture ? Certainly in Christchurch Shetland societies are still quite strong given their relatively recent removal from the islands of the deep south and relocation to the ChCh.

Thanks to Elliot and Liz for sparking this interest by the way (and Ruby and the baby).

Re: Shetland to Aoteoroa

There's an old fella who lives in Karori who plays a mean fiddle . As far as I know, he was born here (in NZ) and learned fiddle as well as classical stuff. His Dad (born in Shetlands) was also a fiddler.

Doesn't exactly answer your question, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Cheers

I have no idea about any of this, but I would love to know what you find out! Good luck!
