Jim Corry gives us a nice example of good backing musicianship - supportive, intuitive, inventive - while Martin Hayes blazes through a few tunes and key changes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69V_s7-2Uls&NR=1
and the same dynamic duo here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuf14RbdOlw&feature=related
With all the moaning about backup over the years, this should prove the point that decent backup provides context and colour without tromping on the melody players' toes.

Hi Drone,
Thanks for posting these!

Re: nice backup
I had the pleasure of Jim Corry's backing at a session in Ballaghaderreen a few years ago - on an upright piano, which he tuned himself.

Re: nice backup
I'm off to see Mr Hayes in Liverpool in October. Minus Mr Corry I'm afraid but with Mr Cahill. How happy am I!!! Sorry, I know I shouldn't gloat.

Re: nice backup
And to think that some say piano doesn't really belong in Irish trad. Yet another example of, "It's not the instrument, it's the player."
(And--they never head of Charlie Lennon, maybe.)

Re: nice backup
Speaking as a piano player, I enjoyed this.

Although he was playing the wrong brand of keyboard. I prefer Roland keyboards to Yamaha.
