Brattleboro, Vermont tin whistle players ?

Brattleboro, Vermont tin whistle players ?

I have friend who is an advanced beginner whistle player who lives in Wilmington, Vermont who is looking for help in the form of lessons, kitchen sessions in or about Brattleboro. She plays guitar, squeeze box and has a good sense of Irish music.

She has limited internet access which why I am asking the question. Do you know of anyone who lives in the area who would be willing to give her some lessons or has a ITM group she could join? There are no ITM sessions in southern Vermont and very limited sessions statewide that I can find.

Thanks for your help

Re: Brattleboro, Vermont tin whistle players ?

I had the feeling that there was a large community of persons interested in traditional music and song in the area - the late and much missed Margaret MacArthur was a powerhouse of influence in the area, and had basically founded the Morris Meet that happens there each year by initially inviting the two local sides to come and dance at a party in her garden. From such acorns do great oaks grow.
Perhaps if you widen your search from just sessions to all aspects of folk music you will soon find what you are looking for.

I highly recommend this session class with Keith Murphy and Becky Tracy (of Nightingale and Wild Asparagus) - http://www.bmcvt.org/school/classes/celtic-music-session Starts next Wed in Brattleboro, so don't delay. It is excellent.

There is also a regular session in Putney on Wed nights (at McCliment's on Route 5 from 6:30-9:30). Not a slow session, but it's open to clueful newbies and the sweet potato fries are unbeatable. There is also a slower-speed, dots-friendly session in Shelburne Falls, MA on Sundays at Mocha Maya's (this is probably geographically friendly to Wilmington.)

There is a group on Facebook called "Vermont Session Obsession" that might be helpful to others searching for VT session info. I understand there is a session class held in Montpelier as well.

I'm not aware of any tin whistle teachers, but who knows what options are lurking in the hills. If I hear of any, I will post.

I run a session in Shelburne Falls,MA that might be a good fit. We're down Route 112 about 35-40 minutes from Wilmington. Your friend could connect up with some good musicians who welcome new players who are serious about learing ITM.

Drop me an email or sent me hers, and I'll be happy to contact her and give her directions or talk with her a little about the session.

Don't forget the Red Fox session in Bondville, not too far from Wilmington on Wednesdays except during mud season (May and November). Jill Newton and Laurie Indenbaum play some IrTrad fiddle along with other genres there. Tommy Logan, proprietor, chimes in on percussion. They usually have an uilleann pipes/whistler as well.
