Gavin, McGuire

Gavin, McGuire

Was Frankie Gavin influenced by Sean McGuire? He says that Tommy Potts was his biggest influence in one of his interviews, but I hear more Coleman than Potts. Of course they are different generations. Has he ever mentioned Sean McGuire?

Re: Gavin, McGuire

I hear more Morrison than Coleman in his style.

But, as Jack and Kenny so eloquently pointed out, there's only one Frankie Gavin...

Re: Gavin, McGuire

In Bringing it All Back Home (p. 89) James Morrison is mentioned by Frankie as his main influence.

Re: Gavin, McGuire

You've got a good memory , "Jumper". Frankie Gavin appeared on a programme discussing Irish fiddle players with Yehudi Menuhin, and specifically spoke of his admiration for the playing of James Morrison, as mentioned above. May well have been the "Bringing It All Back Home" programme, as Henk says. I haven't heard of him expressing any particular admiration for Sean McGuire's music, but that doesn't really mean much. Best to ask him. You'll find him at any "De Danann" gig, apparently.
