Jackie is backed up by piano and percussion - wood block from the sound of things. Jackie himself picks up the banjo to back up Timmy on his tracks. Cronin was a student of Morrison's as well, starting out on fiddle. I will post his Irish Accordion LP here soon; don't have a pic of the cover for this recording as I only have the dub.

Some notes on a couple of the tunes: Offaly Favorite is an old banjo tune, the Darkie's Dream: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/6763 Michael Gorman played this, calling it Gannon's, this is on the Sligo Champion 2CD. Cronin follows that with the Showman's Fancy; compare with Joe Derrane's rendition.

The last tune is played first in this medley of jigs: Anderson's, Meehan's Favorite, Trip to the Cottage. Anderson's might refer to the legendary Sligo piper, who lived in NYC for some time. This tune was called Up Sligo by Coleman; Meehan's Favorite is the Wandering Minstrel.

Jackie does a great job on the Mason's Apron; compare to Paddy Killoran's earlier recording, which Kevin Burke takes after. Jackie's sounds a bit more like other settings in spots, more use of the a~A3 intro, where Killoran played af|ec3~ ABcA EFAB c2 etc.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche and Timmy Cronin: Irish Violin and Accordion

I have loads of old stuff I could upload but Im concerned about copy-write issues. Should I be? Old vinyl, and cassettes all unavailable now and hard to find., but perhaps the companies might reissue?

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche and Timmy Cronin: Irish Violin and Accordion

Tracks are as follows:

Jackie Roche - O'Rourke's Favorite, The Irish Maid, Miss McLeod's
Timmy Cronin - Anderson's, Meehan's Favorite, Trip to the Cottage
Jackie Roche - Taylor's, Harvest Home
Timmy Cronin - Morning Star, Musical Priest, Swallow's Tail
Jackie Roche - O'Hara's Fancy, Mouse in the Cupboard, Father Hanley's
Timmy Cronin - Busby's, Corkonian Polka
Timmy Cronin - The Scholar, The Bright Star of Munster
Jackie Roche - Plains of Boyle, Stack of Wheat
Timmy Cronin - Offally Favorite, Twilight in Athlone
Jackie Roche - Boys of the Lough, Master Roger's, Mason's Apron
Timmy Cronin - Off to California, Hennessey's
Jackie Roche - Belles of Tipperary, The Dawn

I've never heard of anyone taking an interest in the legacy of the Avoca discography, although some of us of course show an interest in reissues. As far as I know it's unknown who the owners are at this stage; I don't see Rego, for instance, making these recordings available now. So I don't have qualms about letting you all hear.

I am being true to my obligation not to share publicly recordings that were given to me in confidence, some of which are the property of institutions such as University College Cork. That'll have to wait. The Séamus Ennis CD released by RTE was a great example of what can be done, but I have the feeling the future's not in commercial productions like that, rather on-demand items, and I hope RTE and NPU and others wake up to this fact someday and offer up the huge mass of archival material they have in their vaults for download, instead of going to the bother of burning CDs, making booklets, etc.

Unfortunately the ITMA seems to have taken up the opposite tack, their latest batch of digitized material isn't available for download.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche and Timmy Cronin: Irish Violin and Accordion

Would anyone have another name for O'Hara's Fancy?- it's not in the DB here, but sounds very familiar.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche and Timmy Cronin: Irish Violin and Accordion

That's Strike the Gay Harp, played in C; it's written in both C and D in the James Morrison tunebook that came out this year.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche and Timmy Cronin: Irish Violin and Accordion

I do have that Paddy Canny tape - Bernie Stocks had it up on his blog, from which he seems to have unfortunately retired. Fantastic music, was trying out the Boys of Ballisodare in F on the fiddle just the other day, aping Paddy.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche and Timmy Cronin: Irish Violin and Accordion

I love playing in F, C Dm Gm and the like, such mellow and richer tones.... . Bernie Stocks, yes thats it, he had/has? some great stuff altogether up there.

Re: Upload - Jackie Roche and Timmy Cronin: Irish Violin and Accordion

The Gan ainm reel played by Paddy Canny in the consolation prize posted by Ionannas is this one:
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/633
St. Ruth's Bush, by Paddy Kelly.
(I learned it from Paddy O'Briens tapes.)
