Sometimes I really effing hate football. Tonight was one of those nights. The local GAA squad won the local cup on Sunday and they were on the piss for two days, one of which coincided with the quiet Monday night session. I don't know if you know the types but they're all there with their military style football jerseys, military style haircuts drinking to beat the band and singing ra songs up at the bar. None of them can sing a complete verse and chorus of anything, none of them can even sing in tune, they can't dance, they can't offer a recitation, they can't give a step on the floor, they can't play a tune, they can't even plant a f ucking spud any more, they can't even hold their drink but they're god's gift to Irish culture as far as they are concerned. It makes me puke when the only soldier who ever lifted a gun in battle for Ireland was an 80 year old man who doesn't say boo who was drummed out of his seat by these neanderthals who was visibly upset with their constant ra ra ra effing ra shite. Sorry about the rant. Who the f uck do they think they are.
</rant>
At least they were keeping it in the bar/tavern/pub. And at least they were just singing songs. It's Better than trashin' the streets, rioting and vandalising. As far as the sectarianism- does it really matter? Chicago Bulls or Penn State fans will riot after a big win or loose with no politics involved.I know that doesn't make it better but as time goes on the 'bar' for what passes as decent behavior gets lower and lower....sorry they ruined your night.
What is "GAA" and who are these musically challenged types?
I'm ver y confused!
Are these "footballers" (?!) expected to be able to dance, sing and play an instrument or be good at vegetable horticulture (?!).
And what's all this stuff about guns and Ireland. Isn't all that rebelious patriotic stuff a bit last century now, love?
Ah, the timeless battle. Doesn't Jung have something to say about this with his archetypes, the athlete and the musician? No? He should have.
Just remember, while athletes may have to submit themselves to massive bodily harm and exhaustion to attract the opposite sex, musicians need simply to sit still and make music.
Pat, I didn't make it to the session last night and I'm sure the rowdiness was a drag but I'm willing to guess it was a profitable night for Maeve and her pub and given her druthers, she might prefer partiers to those of us who only have one or no pints at all. At least it keeps the pub's bills paid so that it's open for more sessions. Toronto is a very expensive city for bars and restaurant owners.
Dennis, SWFL Fiddler c'mon now. We all know that flute players, using so-called non-traditional atriculations, can be very popular.
The rule book clearly states, " tonguing violations must be strictly enforced." Talk about watching your tongue.
Settled down after that rant.
@Hup, Toronto is home to a huge Irish immigrant population that is being reinforced with large numbers of young skilled trades due to the downturn in the Irish economy and the collapse of visas to America after 9/11. It supports intercity GAA leagues (men and women) and a nascent Hurling scene that is being revived after the glory years of the seventies.
The equivalent here in the USA, I guess, is trying to keep a session going in a pub when there's an NFL game on TV.
Some of us had started a little session on Sundays at a pub here but when NFL season approached the owner told us no more music until after the season. Just as well.

Hey Nate-Why not just meet in a pub and sing a couple of verses of that central Pa. anthem Rifles of the NRA!

Oh you linguistically cunning fluters.
I've been told I was handy with the stick once or twice in my time.
