I use http://vixy.net to convert YouTube video clips to audio only (mp3). It has worked in the past.
But now, I want to capture a particular YouTube audio & vixy net returns a file w/ zero bytes. If I try to convert the video (w/audio) the result is similar ~ the video (.avi) is converted but no audio.
I'll keep trying. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
I gave up on vixy.net - youtube must have changed something, and vixy didn't keep up. I searched for "convert flv to mp3" and used some site with a name that sounded similar. Good luck...
i use 'Free Youtube to Mp3 convertor' to convert youtube videos to sound files.. You just start the program, paste the URL for the video into the box that comes up, and tell it to download and comvert.... works like a charm...
get it here: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/free-dvd-video-software-download.htm
there is also a program that allows you to download the videos in mp4 or avi format if you want the whole video...
It downloads a file and converts it to your preferred format - avi, mpeg, mp3, dvd etc.
It can also convert a previously downloaded file so if, for example, you download and save as mpeg you can then extract mp3 from it. ( or change flv to mpeg etc)
If all else fails then what should work is to play the video on YouTube and record the incoming audio stream as a sound file on your hard drive. I use Creative's Media Source Player for this (it comes free as part of the Creative suite of programs with many PCs). I choose the "What U Hear" input and stereo wav 44.1kHz 16 bit for the recorded file (mp3 and wma can be used if desired).
Thanks for all your responses. I was able to capture the mp3.
I'll check out each of the converters. This time I downloaded the flash video using Orbit downloader & then converted to mp3 w/ Media Converter. Too bad vixy.net does not work on UToob.
Here is the original ~
Tim Collins "Humours of Tullycrine/Garden of Daisies" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3jBUcgDT4c
And you can also do what lazyhound said with Audacity (except the wma) but in both cases your sound card has to support "what you here" or "wave out mix" or similar.
BUT - anything else you do while recording gets included so just sit and listen or turn off sounds for mouse clicks, incoming emails etc. Stuttering gaps are usually just delays so can be deleted and closed up. Turned on and un-muted microphones may be picked up as well.
With the general poor quality of audio from youtube I don't quite understand why you'd want to do that. I think in general musicians put up with youtube for the exposure value but I can't imagine many being happy about the audio being lifted. It seems you can't play music other than on your own in your own house these days without folk helping themselves, regardless of the situation.
I became interested in listening to recordings online when SoundLantern had an audio website. There has been no replacement since they disappeared, without a trace. The sound quality varied a great deal from one member to the next. I use an audio converter because I do not have an internet connection at home. It is not always worth listening to the audio when I do have an internet connection, because I am almost always in a public setting. Therefore, I need a converter so I may listen at home.
I do understand, bogman.
This forum is good for discussing how each of us chooses to use our ears & various sources of music ~ live, broadcast, streaming, recorded . . . This site provides none of this, though hardly a day goes by someone doesn't link a YouTube recording. As I have said many times before, I miss SoundLantern. With it's passing there is one less way for members to pass along their own recordings, though some have chosen to place these on YouTube. I hope something along the lines of SoundLantern is eventually created. I much preferred it to YouTube.

Re: YouTube conversion ~ .mp3
Another option is the freeware Vdownloader.
http://www.vdownloader.es/
It downloads a file and converts it to your preferred format - avi, mpeg, mp3, dvd etc.
It can also convert a previously downloaded file so if, for example, you download and save as mpeg you can then extract mp3 from it. ( or change flv to mpeg etc)
