A new look at sessioning - it's a wonderful thing.

A new look at sessioning - it's a wonderful thing.

Well, maybe that's just my opinion of the moment.
Just back from 16 days in the US.
Nightmare end to the journey out, stuck on the plane just off the runway, watching others landing with huge bow-waves in a torrential thunderstorm, till the pilot announced he had to take us back to the terminal as he was coming up to the 15 hours a day the FAA allowed him to work; given stand-by tickets with no promises for the next flight, or even the next day. Asperger-type No. 1 son going fairly mental at all this.
Finally got to scheduled destination about 6 hours late after 27 hours travelling.
Next day awoke in fine hotel, good breakfast, free shuttle back to the airport, pick-up hire car, off to holiday let.
Only TWO family rows in the next week.
A good Sacred Harp sing in the week.
The local session, as listed here, seems to be cancelled for the summer ( in a tourist location too ! ). What ??
Then off to the outlaws for the second week. On the last day we are around there is a fiddlers' convention; it's soo hot the perspiration is running down from under my hat and over my glasses...
But, late in the day, we find ourselves sitting in the "old-timey" session, and everything is resolved; lots of tunes we know, and we're definitely ITM-inclined, not old-timey, friendly faces, an introduction, an invitation to a party.......it's so marvellous that one can sit down and play some music with people you have never met before, and there is an immediate bond and understanding.
Just wish we hadn't had to come back the next day.
So, come on, folks.
Put away your grouches.
We do this stuff because we enjoy it, right ?

Re: A new look at sessioning - it's a wonderful thing.

That what does it for me.
It does seem as if you always meet the folk that would've made your holiday, on the day before you leave
What instruments did you take, apart (from the two-row family discordion you mentioned)?

You are hereby officially invited to visit Arkansas as well as Florida the next time you come to the United States. Just contact me and I will be glad to give the times, dates, and locations of friendly music sessions here.

Re: A new look at sessioning - it's a wonderful thing.

Here in Chicago, it seems we have a few folks trying to broaden the amount of normal person Sessions. (Many of the sessions here, if you can find them, are pleayed by a pretty close knit group of pro's or close to it players.)

You an I must have been in New York at the same time. We were flying into a huge storm a few weeks ago and sat in Albany for almost 5 hours!

Yeah, I'm starved for a good session... All that seems to happen in my life is sniping and popularity contests I want nothing to do with... Calm down...

Pete, whereabouts were you? If you were within howling distance of Boston, I'd-a tried to see you...

Re: A new look at sessioning - it's a wonderful thing.

Pete, drop the family elsewhere or take off on your own for the musical trip YOU want , as far as families are concerned , "the willing horse gets whipped ". next year go to willie clancy or the fleadh ceol with your instrument as partner

Re: A new look at sessioning - it's a wonderful thing.

Yeah, I don't think we'll take the two-row family discordion again, ever.
AND I managed to leave the digital camera behind somewhere. It only has the last two days of the holiday on the chip, but that included a brief video from this old-timey session, when they played a tune I didn't know, and I will be sorry if I have lost that. Still hoping it's on the floor somewhere at my brother-in-law's place.
