Dixon sound

Dixon sound

Hi everybody,

I have a Dixon low d whistle(ABS head,aluminium body),and I really like the sound of it.
If I was about buying a more professional/expensive one, which of the "big makers"would be similar to it?

Thank you!

Re: Dixon sound

Not too sure about low whistles but for what it's worth:

I have a Tony Dixon high D aluminium (or is it nickel?) and high D brass. The brass has a much rougher sound, and not in a good way, in my personal opinion. I also have a high D polymer Tony Dixon and it doesn't fit my needs. Sure, I've been tempted to buy more expensive than my €25 aluminium/nickel Tony Dixon D but having tried whistles of the calibre of John Sindt, Chieftain, Susato, Burke etc I just don't think they're worth the extra investment. If you like the sound of what you've got, don't bother buying anything else.

Alternatively, try to pick up a good second-hand Generation or an old Oak whistle for cheap. That's just what I'd do anyway :)

Re: Dixon sound

Just curious, but is there something about your Dixon whistle that makes you think you need a more expensive whistle? There's no harm in having a few whistles in your arsenal, for variety's sake (although the tendency to acquire more whistles is something that can run out out of control and should be kept in check ;-) ), but if you really like the sound of your Dixon, why do you need another whistle?

Re: Dixon sound

I just thought about buying a new one, because the one I have has a very low volume, and is very weak at the low D,E notes.
I'd like to go with the same sound, but a better built whistle...thinking about a Burke Viper. No clue if that would fit in the sound I like

Re: Dixon sound

For volume, Burkes are good. They have an acceptable tone that a lot of people like, but they're not my cup of tea personally, especially given the prices! John Sindt is a lot more affordable and a lot of people swear by them. Don't get me wrong, they're fantastic whistles, just not the sound I prefer. But the volume is good. There is also Chieftain and Susato whistles but I don't like either of them myself so never really bothered considering them seriously.

Though, if you don't play the flute, maybe step up the next rung of the ladder. Potentially loads of volume and a sound you'll be pleased with. :)
