So many ....
The sad ones: Anachie Gordon
The happy ones; The Dark-eyed Sailor
The songs of betrayal and sorrow: As I Roved Out (Andy Irvine's version)
"Belle qui tiens ma vie" (Thoinot Arbeau, 1520-1595)
There are many versions on YouTube, one of my favourites being http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFgNOQe3vGI&NR=1
Note that the title is sometimes "Belle qui tient ma vie"
The Renaissance French text is
Belle qui tiens ma vie
Captive dans tes yeulx,
Qui m'as l'ame ravie
D'un soubz-ris gracieux,
Viens tost me secourir
Ou me fauldra mourir.
Pourquoy fuis tu mignarde
Si je suis pres de toy,
Quand tes yeulx je regarde
Je me perds dedans moy
Car tes perfections
Changent mes actions.
Approche donc ma belle
Approche toy mon bien,
Ne me sois plus rebelle
Puis que mon coeur est tien,
Pour mon mal appaiser,
Donne moy un baiser.
Lovely Scots song about a shepherd who disguises himself as a noble and then goes to his girlfriend and offers her endless wealth, carriages, horses, gold, several castles, if she will marry him. She tells him to b*gger off, as she would rather be with her poor shepherd even though he hasn't even a horse or a cow to his name. Then your man informs her that he witnessed the poor shepherd fooling around with someone else, but the lady remains unperturbed, accusing him of lying. The fella throws off his disguise -- he *is* her poor shepherd -- and says that now that she has proved herself true to him, he will marry her.
The song tells this in a beautiful romantic way but when you think about it, you realize, what a d*ck. Seriously, ladies, where do we find these losers?
Feminist balladeers get there own back with Sovay, about the girl who cross dresses and rides out to meet her lover on the plain and rob him if his gold and jewels. She attempts to take a diamond ring off him but he refuses, saying he would rather die than give up the ring. Satisfied she rides away. Later they are in the garden and he sees his stuff on her. She admits it was she who robbed him, wanting to see if he loved her enough to keep the ring no matter what. As he hadn't given up the ring to the robber, she decides he is probably an okay bloke.
I have heard a variant of this song where he does indeed give the ring to the "robber" and she later shoots him dead in the garden. Harsh.

Donal Og - very old song usually sung in Irish, but works just as well in English. Al O'Donnell does a great version of it.

And it's beautiful sung in 4-part harmony. Happened to stumble across it at a workshop last work.
