Here's something a little different, a collection of recordings of the County Leitrim singer Tom Moran, made by Séamus Ennis in 1954, and long out of copyright.
I asked a namesake of Tom's recently whether he was related to the singer (Moran's a reasonably common name in the Mohill area). His reply was negative, but he certainly remembered 'the ballad man', as he called him.
Excellent stuff Floss - have you, or are you thinking of formalising your findings & listings ? Seems to me that you are putting together a very interesting and very valuable resource.
If these are all out of copyright, the archive is a good spot to put them - Kevin the piper has put plenty of great 78s up there, but there seems to be plenty of room for more material. http://www.archive.org is the url
That's a fine suggestion, Jon, but I think I'd prefer to host the links from my own site and create pages which correct the many errors which appear in the Peter Kennedy biographies. That'll take me a while, but will be well worth doing.
Thanks again Floss - this will be passed on to an elderly Irish friend of mine, a traditional singer now living here in W Australia who has hundreds of rare songs himself. He and his wife already had great pleasure from your Seamus Ennis album. Your reach is great!
01 - Thomas Moran - As I Roved Out
02 - Thomas Moran - The Bilberry Or Blaeberry Courtship
03 - Thomas Moran - A Boy In Love He Fears No Cold
04 - Thomas Moran - The Blind Beggar's Daughter
05 - Thomas Moran - The Bonny Bunch Of Roses O
06 - Thomas Moran - The Broken Token (Young And Single Sailor)
07 - Thomas Moran - Captain Thunderbolt (The Shannon Side)
08 - Thomas Moran - Drumhullogan's Bottom
09 - Thomas Moran – The Frog and The Mouse
10 - Thomas Moran - Green Bushes
11 - Thomas Moran - Handsome Polly (The Bonny Lass O' Fyvie)
12 - Thomas Moran - The Indian Lass
13 - Thomas Moran - Jack Mulroe (The Chester Merchant)
14 - Thomas Moran - The Jolly Tinker
15 - Thomas Moran - Lovely Annie (Farewell, My Dearest Nancy)
16 - Thomas Moran - The Maid Of Magheracloone
17 - Thomas Moran - Next Monday Morning
18 - Thomas Moran - The Old Cow Of Kinlough
19 - Thomas Moran - The Paisley Officer
20 - Thomas Moran - The Tailor's Courtship
21 - Thomas Moran - Up To The Rigs Of London Town
22 - Thomas Moran - The Blind Man He Could See (Marrowbones)
Why they substituted "The Wonderful German Musicianer" for The Frog and the Mouse aka Kitty Alone aka Froggy Went a Courting on track 9 I have no idea. By a curious coincidence I have the full take of Ennis recording this song from Moran: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2j5indk5nnm This was part of a Long Note program hosted by Jackie Small in 1978 that RTE had for download on its CeolNet service, unfortunately long out of commission.
Hi I can't get that mediafire link to work. Has it expired? The tune I was looking for was The Maid Of Magheracloone. My uncle who grew up a stone's throw from Magheracloone asked me recently about the song he'd heard as a boy. Would this recording be available to purchase anywhere these days? Claddagh or what not?

Again, this is a copy of a Folktrax cassette - track listing and biographical details can be found here: http://www.folktrax-archive.org/menus/cassprogs/076moran.htm.

Thanks for this! I'm discovering a lot of the older artists this way.
