My ears recognise this as a Trad Tune. Any ideas? I suppose thers a fair amount of inevitable crossover between the two musical traditions. I wonder if the fife player gets equally f##ked off by Lambeg players. In which case he's worse off than any Bodhran haters. At least they dont invent there own language. Bodhran speak!! clackty clack! Cant remember where I heard this tune initially. Cran or Birkin Tree possibly.. Part of me feels confused, I like the tune..yet
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
Thing that struck me about that clip was although we could just about hear the tune, the drummers, some as far away as at least 30/40 ft, kept in time with the music. Must be something in the blood........!
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
good point..rekon they all rehearse seperately along to a particualr beat and the the fife just play to the beat of the drum..Im sure this will confound llig if hes still sniffing about here sumwhere..I wonder how many other tunes cross over between trad and orange music.

We were asked recently to play at a "Scottish Festival" which turned out to be a bbq at a Rangers Supporters Club in a Toronto suburb that shall remain unnamed. It was everything one would have anticipated and more. The running battle was between the attendees who were "rather anxious" for us to play The Sash and the management who were "extremely concerned" that we shouldn't. We managed to emerge with reputations intact.

An aul ella round my way once told me he was asked to play piano for an event at a Golf Club in Belfast in the 70s. So he did and it was all going Grand. Feeling somwhat relaxed towards the end of the night took a couple of drinks. He was then asked in good faith to play the Anthem. He proceeded with the first rousing few bars of Amhran na bhFiann before a tap on the shoulder and the shaking of heads interupted the performance. Having been given the sheetmusic he began playing the "correct Anthem" God save the Queen before a few of the more understanding locals made sure he got safely home.

Mary Robinson was conferred with an honourary law degree from U Toronto while she was still president. As her name was announced and she stood up to accept the degree the band launched into a passionate rendition of g** save the q*****. She stopped in her tracks, gave the band a withering look before they proceeded to fall apart. No one had the score for Amhran na bhFiann, all live on Canadian television.
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
Mary Robinson is from Ardoyne in North Belfast..A little known fact.. It was once put to me whilst working in the South when I presented one of my co-workers with this fact
"do you not have to be Irish to be president"
Dumbfounded I shook my head and just said -yeh u wud think, the torch was then taken up by a marvellous fella from Ballymun who quite audibly went about correcting the Free State education deficit present in said co worker.
Grand job
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
Wrong one, Trucks. You're thinking of the current President, Mary McAleese.
One of the main makers of Lambeg drums used to live across the way from us. Last time I saw him was in the Kitchen Bar in Johnnie Joe's in Cushendall. Was he playing a bodhran - no - anything but . . .
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
Ragaman, Fife players actually do regularly join some of our sessions up here, in North Antrim.
As there is a tradition of Fifes playing traditional music in this area, I don't see why they shouldn't be represented at a local traditional music session.
..................... We draw the line at Lambeg Drums though!
We also regularly have Scottish Smallpipes & Northumbrian Pipes at one or two of our sessions.
We have even had Hurdy Gurdy, Shawm, Crumhorn & Great English Pipe at one of our sessions too, but that's another story, for another day!
N.B. I don't think Marcas Ó Murchú has stopped laughing since that night!
Of course, 'The Boys of Belfast' sounds much better when the Fifes actually outnumber the Drums:
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
Man, I never thought i'd hear anything more irritating than a bad spoons player but it just goes to show, never say never. What is the thinking behind that drum???
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
I like the way you physically drew the line ............................ at Lembeg drums.. The subconcious marvels of partition ..
I once went into Matchets in Belfast in tried to play a Fife. Bb I think
. Anyone who can walk and play that thing must have lungs on them like Linford Christy. Having resembled more of a Christy Brown- I didnt buy it.
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..

Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
and my ear was right about Cran!! That going back a few years. I only have that album on tape. Wonder if it can still be sourced. I feel a trip to outlet records on the cards
Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
I thought "Outlet" had gone bust, "Trucks". I' d love to hear it wasn't so.
"Cran's" first CD is definitely available on CD - saw it at the Willie Clancy week a few weeks ago.

Anyone complaining about the goat skinners gets this clip. "Well, we could have them play the other kind of Irish drum if you like..."

Re: Back from the dead - Recapping latest news and political developments from home and came across this clip of "orangefest"..
Aye, and that's what they'd get at a session. One poor tune player and twenty drums. Sessions would have to go underground to avoid the weakenedness.
