Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Irishmusic-itis!!!!

This is a disease commonly found in musicians who have lets say reached , or think they have reached "The Best they can be" in irish music performance and look down their nose on all other musicians because they believe no-one is as good as themselves. They spend their time paying no attention to playing skill, tune ornaments, or looking for nice tunes because they spend all their time looking for fault in what the performer is playing. Commonly found in certain areas and families of Irish Traditional Music. Certain Fleadh and ITM competition judges have also been found to have it. Be aware, symptoms include...
1. Smirking and giggling while other musicians are playing.
2. Not inviting others into sessions because they believe their session to be too good for them.
3. Not listening to other musicians and expecting them to listen to your playing because you believe you are too good to mingle with the likes of them.
4. Believing you are better than all other musicians, and refusing to play common tunes and sessions.

If these symtoms occur please consult your local Pub owner and ask if there are any sessions on in the next few days. Play at a common session every week for two years and if symptoms persist, you are incurable.

This is not contagious.

This is commonly found in certain areas of Ireland for example Clare, Donegal, Kerry, and Dublin in particular order.

If you feel it coming on, please leave a comment, and I will try and help you, or talk it out of you.

Just a friendly warning from your local music doctor :)
M.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Maybe we need a punk rock moment in ITM, those spittoons would certainly come in handy. Back to basics, I say, guitars with 3 chords (Up 1), Bodhrans with 1 beat (up 1) and to equalise it, box's with 1 row of buttons (down 2). Brilliant.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Dr Quigley. I've often found that another symptom of the aforementioned disease is the refusal to play alone, especially for free, without been accompanied by other well known musicians of a similar ability. I'm germ free myself DG.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

I think it's called insecurity.

It wears off in mid-life.

This is because it is replaced by apathy.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Much like the swine flu there are outbreaks reported outside the original infectious zone. There's a particularly virulent strain identified in my locality.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Interesting notion Máirtín. And we all know the afflicted, of course.

Though I wondering whether you have room for a No 5? Believing that you are the "glue" that holds the session together (even though you're not actually playing tunes).

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

That's the punk attitude, "Now I wanna sniff some glue" by The Ramones. How good is that? At the moment I just wanna be sedated, tho.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Did someone say punk rock? That turned into a bonny bunch of crap didn't it? Turned right into a uniform and a predetermined sound with no originality. Now the Irish/punk thing is becoming popular and seems to require caps, suspenders, work boots and a piano accordian.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

shanty, you're behind the times. It's kilts, vests (aka "wife-beaters" in The States), and electric guitars now.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

I think what you have found Martin is that music is played by people. And that you get all sorts of people in every walk of life.

That's the same reason that some sessions are friendly, elitist, informal, pompous, chatty, overly-reverential, irreverent, well dressed, naked, fun, po-faced, drive in the fast lane, drive on the hard shoulder, etc etc.

i.e. because people are friendly, elitist, informal, pompous, chatty, overly-reverential, irreverent, well dressed, naked, fun, po-faced, drive in the fast lane, drive on the hard shoulder, etc etc.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

So when I show up at the Oran Mor on Wed I fully expect you all to be naked. Right?

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

It's no disease Dr. Quigley - they're called "Divas," and you can find them in all sorts of musical genres.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

I think nicholas has it right. The really sad ones are the older folks still acting like this. :-P

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Some people can be 'full of themselves'. The Music has survived in spite of people like that.

Snooty Wagnerians.....

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Hey SilverSpear, that's not the first time i've noticed you asking people to turn up naked at sessions.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

I am glad that I don't exhibit any of the symptoms of Irishmusic-itis because I have enough health problems already. One of these problems is that I became unglued many years ago. Since there is no cure for this condition, I guess that means I can't be the glue that holds a session together.

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

It's not the first time Chris has offered! :)

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Hmm...now despite the name, I do know that Silver Spear has no 'spear' per se, if you'll excuse the poor innuendo.

So SS, do you often get offers from fellers to remove their clothing? ;-)

# Posted on August 4th 2009 by SWFL Fiddler

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Myself ,Captain Bpart ,Bad Santa and Thug would offer but we are too modest and shy when SS comes to visit us down in the Cumberland , Byker

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Ah, you are true gentlemen!

Well, at least until SS gets in here and destroys all the illusions. :-P

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Ah, how quickly the discussion goes from arrogance to nakedness!

# Posted on August 5th 2009 by AlBrown

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Often enough, SWFL. Too bad it's usually skeezy drunks in the pub.

Dave, makes me wonder what sessions in the Cumberland are like when I am not there.

# Posted on August 5th 2009 by DrSilverSpear

Re: Irishmusic-itis!!!!

Hee hee! I can't imagine, poor SS. Doesn't bouzouki dave and the fellas fend off the skeezes fer ya? A lass with a set of pipes? I can't imagine. You'd probably get less attention with short shorts.
