Finding session locations on the current system.....
Finding session locations on the current system.....
....is a total pain.
For instance, I know that one of the sessions I facillitate is not given accurately at all on those little maps, and I do say "Use Multimap and the postcode" to help people.
Trying to find locations of sessions in the US of A, trying to zoom back to get a wider picture and then print the thing before we leave on holiday - total pain in the proverbials !!
I do much appreciate the efforts that have gone into making this site work - thank you, Jeremy - but is there a better possible system for actually pinpointing places ? It would give me grey hairs if I wasn't full of them already.
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Pete, it's the 21st century now. Make a list of the street addresses, and enter them into one of those little GPS ("sat nav") devices that plug. The cheaper ones are down around 100 dollars (US) now. Or rent a car that has one.
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Good point, greg n'sheils! I just tried Google with the address of a new session (happened to be at the Mayflower in San Rafael, California) and was rewarded not only with directions, but also with a photo of the place!
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Or, Pete, if you prefer the human touch, try emailing the people who submitted the session to the database. I'm sure they would be glad to provide good directions for you.
You can't expect Jeremy to hold your hand, all the time.
That said--if you're heading to the Seattle area, let me know, I'll be happy to help out.
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
I'm surprised tthat glengarslasher, a Dubliner, claims that there are no postcodes in Ireland since they certainly exist in the city of his/her birth (D1, D2, etc.). The Six Counties are also completely covered in postcodes!
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Hi Pete, when you get to some of these sessions in the USA , please feel free to join my one-man campaign to add public transport and/or other relevant "how to get there" info to session listings, as I've done with a few I've visited in Australia and elsewhere
like this: http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/278
Those who come after will thank you
Postcodes certainly don't exist in the R.o.I. in the sense of providing precise addresses for SatNavs and mail trackers
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
made me go back and check it!
as a visitor, hopefully my info is useful to others who might be unfamiliar with a particular locale.
Locals tend to give you information like "yeh, that pub that used to be the Black Bush, just past where the old Woolworths used to be before the betting shop... oh has that closed down ? anyway... you can't miss it"
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
I meant no post codes as in Zip codes which were mentioned in the post before mine
the system in ireland is limited to citys and even then very rudimentry
I come from Rural Tipperary but live in Dublin and if you sent a letter to say jim ryan kilbeg cappawhite Co tipperary this could be any of a number of people so all the Ryans have nicknames like ryan whip ryan dust etc and the letter would be addressed Jim Ryan (W) for ryan whip certainly not a post code as the rest of the world knows it but an irish solution
we also recently had 2 guys from England ring a radio station
complaining that their sat nav could not direct them and they were 2 hours looking for an address in west dublin
D15 has approx 50000 residents so a simple 2 letter code is useless and more and more people are finding the lack of a real post code system a problem in locating addresses
I'll have to check this out when I have more time.
According to Floss the Tethers entering the building # is a problem (for Google maps?).
I thought I had been fairly successful getting maps once I had the street address.
Have to go to work soon. If you see this Floss let me know what's been your experience.

Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Google Earth is fine for many industrialised parts of the world, but pretty hopeless for tracking down rural addresses in Ireland where there is often only just a townland name to give a clue.
My own townland hasn't yet been surveyed by the Satnav or Google boffins, something verified each time I order goods from a company such as Amazon and get called up by a perplexed delivery driver.
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Well, you did write that there were 'no post codes in Ireland', glengarslasher, and I was just pointing out that you were wrong, especially as far as The Six Counties is concerned!
Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Thanks Floss! Your comment was specific to Ireland.
Your advice is sound;
"The comments section of the session listings can be used to address mapping issues, but anyone submitting a new session in Ireland needs to ensure that:
a) everything is spelt correctly;
b) only Anglicized place names are used;
c) only the most commonly used version of a place name is included;
d) just the street's name is supplied - no building numbers and no Dublin post codes."
I forgot ~ counties are different in Ireland than in the States.
In Ireland town names may be used in more than one county (I think). In the U.S. town names are used only once in any given state (with a few exceptions)
No worries. These days I am busy & do not logon as frequently.
I only hope some day the wiz writes his memoirs.
As we would say in Austin ~ onward through the fog.

Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
If you don't have the post code you can just put in the addresss: Town/villiage, road. That'll get you pretty close.

Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
but I like Bren's suggestion
My idea of an intellectual is someone who knows when to stop spelling addresssssss

Re: Finding session locations on the current system.....
Jeremy, if the street address textbox is changed from optional to required the resulting maps would be of the location entered.
Why is it optional?

I doubt Google maps recognizes counties.
County names may be helpful for us people, but the map software is not that smart.
