As previously requested to a recent new poster, it is a help to post a few vaguely biographical details about yourself when you first log in.
We don't need to know your real name, your postcode, or your inside leg measurement.
However, a general suggestion of age, location, experience, and number of instruments played gives the rest of us an idea about what sort of person we are talking to, and what help or advice they need.
Embellishing these details with flair and a poetic licence may also amuse at both sides of this communication.
Don't be completely anonimouse ! Give us a few details and we have something to go on. Some people don't even say which side of the Atlantic ( or the equator ) they are !
eg
"Instrument for sale."
"Where, for feck's sake ?".
That's not helpful. Do try to be more so.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
I always like the ones looking for a session, or to start a band, or looking for a teacher locally, without giving us any clue where the heck they are.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
Great idea - until someone and their mates decide to give you a public kicking then having your details up for all to see becomes distinctly less attractive. Only works if everyone is prepared to be nice and not descend into group bullying.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
C'mon, Jack, how many of the members here include their full adress and the ZIP code? If you write that you're e.g. from Greater Manchester area, someone would need to have a lot of determination to search for you to give you a thrashing. On the other end, if you're looking for a local teacher without providing your whereabouts, your chances to get a helpful answer are close to that of winning a dart competition blindfolded.
Please read my comments. If you have any questions about who I am just ask. ;)
The profiles are the ones' where a member contributes something about tunes. Like Will Harmon, Dow, ceolachan . . .
If you have a recording of yourself, online, it would be grand to know on which site. Or post the link.
Cheers!
Do any of those Sound Lantern audio files still exist somewhere?
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
So, I had a fair amount of detail in my biog. I had an urge to get rid of it and change my ID after someone (who hasn't posted for a bit) got threatening in a personal way because I disagreed with him.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
greg - a similar situation meant I binned my biog, which said which town I lived in etc. Intimidation is a nasty thing whether it's intentional or not, and I don't think people are unreasonable for being cautious.
Anyway, if someone want's to know about more about anyone they can PM them.
Guernsey Pete, I agree, people should give some details, and nobody needs to give their full postal address, even what country you are in is more help than no info at all, but surely listing your nearest town shouldn't cause problems. That plus what instruments you play should be the minimum really , further embellishments optional.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
Details, you want details? I am the devil incarnate, the b+astard child of Lou Reed and Mother Jones, the spawn of satan himself, still wanna know me? Awaah, go on then!
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
I would like to see more people post information they have gleaned from their playing. (Well, more experienced people, that is.) We could make the place kind of a Wikepedia of musical information.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
I'm not selling anything or using this site to meet people or to find others in the real world
I use this site to pick up new tunes or get new insites on the music. Sometimes to get info. To hear the posted links or have a laugh. Sometimes it's a strange , fascinating, virtual reality with an odd but wonderful cast of characters.
It's addictive and highly entertaining.
Knowing that I'm in central Pennsylvania and that I play whistle , banjo and struggle with concertina doesn't seem to matter. If I was passing myself off as some kind of authority on something I'd put some more back ground.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
Thank you, Cathy.
I was mentioning your name when discussing "Folk London" cover art last night down at Sharps', to drop a name or two.....
Oh, and Sugarfoot Jack, twasn't me sent the guys round to pick on you, a disagreement on how to sell an instrument is no cause for aggravation as far as I'm concerned, merely a bit of banter. I hope you managed to see them off satisfactorily.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
Thanks Cathy! Sorry to see SoundLantern close down. Happy to see something is in the works. imho the best thing about coming here is all of you got me listening to your audio recordings.
I live in a random town in the northern central valley of california (approximately the same latitude as naples, italy ) & play random wind instruments. my name is random. ;)
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
I didn't move, they threw me out for recalcitrance in the face of the local street gang's cadres and not doffing my cap whenever Don Ego walked past or demanded tribute (as well as crimes against music, to which you have borne witness).
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
Of course, but it's only a $1000 case and an $8000 bow. Swing by while I'm at work 8-5 Monday through Friday and check it out. Do be careful to lock up after you leave. The alarm's out of commission, and is the repairman will be out in about 3 weeks to work on it.
Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
I know a couple of members of this site who found themselves at the receiving end of extremely unpleasant personal messages from the same poster (who thankfuly seems to be no longer active here)..
Other than disappearing completely (with Jeremy's permission and that's hard to get), the only way they could stop the arrival of the messages was to change their user names to something which the obnoxious poster would probably not recognize and delete their personal descriptions.
It's probably wise to keep personal information to the minimum.

You'd hope that if someone was asking that question they might have the gumption to put their location in the post.

Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
Perhaps the precision of location is directly in relation to the amount of internet smack the poster wishes to speak.

I think its merely a case of newcomers not knowing about the bio feature.
HEY, NEWCOMERS! CLICK ON ANYONE'S SCREEN NAME!
Then, go ye and do the same.

Re: Details, details, just give us some details...
Yes, Sugarfoot Jack, personal details are not necessary, and probably not too good an idea. Mine should probably read
Flute and fiddle, Boston area
and that would be enough. One of these days I'll get around to changing it.
