FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Yeah, yeah, yeah...cue the bodhran jokes. Just so you know, I play whistle also.

This HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER drum needs a good home. As you see below in my signature, I currently have FIVE bodhrans (soon to be six), and I need to "thin the herd" by at least one...if not two.

The most logical thing to do is start with the one that gets the least amount of playing time, and that would be the blonde Alfonso. I purchased this drum directly from Albert back in November. It's a PHENOMENAL drum -- the one I've had more compliments on than any other. As a matter of fact, a certain flute player at the sessions I attend love the sound of this instrument so much that he would probably kill me if he knew I was thinking about selling this drum! It just doesn't suit my playing style as well as the other four. I stay away from the top-end style because it doesn't seem to mesh well in most session settings I'm in, and this drum is a superb top-end bodhran. It also plays well for Kerry style, but it suits my particular style less than the other four drums I own.

So, I'm hoping to find someone out there who wants one of the very best bodhrans money can buy. The added bonuses of buying a drum like this that's seen just a little playing time are the following:

1) No wait time! If you order directly from Albert, you may be looking at several weeks, if not months.

2) It's been "played in" just enough. I've already taken the rough surface on the back of the skin off for you via playing it, but it's got YEARS AND YEARS of life in it.

The calfskin on this thing has INCREDIBLE range from deep bass tones to the high "pops." It changes pitch with just slight pressure or moving the hand. The neoprene collar Albert uses, along with the solid brass tuning ring gives it a sound that you cannot get anywhere else. And Albert's own three-point finger tuning system is the easiest I've ever come across.

Albert's website still says he's getting $440 for these, but he indicated to me that price was certain to go up soon because of the price of brass (and that was last year). I don't know if that price is still accurate, or if he simply has not updated his site (which wouldn't surprise me). Anyhow, I'd like to come in somewhere very close to what I paid for this work of art since fine instruments like this typically do not depreciate, and it's still in flawless condition.

If you'd like more information or would like to discuss a purchase, please email me at rproark (at) msn.com <--Yes, I'm paranoid about web bots picking up my email address and sending me boatloads of spam.

Weren't you 'The Baroness' a while back? Why the sex change?

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Ha! No, that's my wife. I registered several months ago as "The Baron," and my wife registered a couple weeks ago as "The Baroness."

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

$440, for ALL six drums?

A bit pricey, but ok if they are good and tunable.

Mind you, even the best drum in the world costs about $160 now.

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Bodhran Bliss....

Is there some humor in that post I'm not picking up on? I'm a bit lost on your statement that "even the best drum in the world costs about $160 now."

Is that an allusion to the economy? If so, I'm not sure why Albert is still selling this particular drum (and he is selling them) for $440 then.

Can you explain your post?

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Bliss is an Irishman living in Manchester.

Baron is in Virginia.

Based on my observations of the human race, I'd bet good money (with the queen's head on the front) that there is some humour in Bliss's email that Baron isn't going to pick up on as long as there's a hole in his butt.

Re Kerry style, may I ask Kerry f**king who?

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Kerry Styles.

Nobby's sister.

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Again, Mr, McKnowall...

Is that an attempt at humor? As one who makes these instruments, I would have expected a bit more courtesy. I expected to hear things like that from certain anti-bodhran folks here, but not from you.

Good luck selling your wares with comments like that.

"Is that an attempt at humor?"

I rest my case m'lud.

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

This is not a bodhran knock but Bliss may not be joking. Anyone paying that sort of money for a bodhran would have to be totally insane.

# Posted on July 29th 2009 by bogman

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Of course that's a "bodhran knock," Bogman.

And why am I NOT surprised? There would be plenty of people who would say anyone paying $______ for __________ (insert any instrument here) would have to be totally insane.

The stuck-up jerk to decent human being ratio here is incredible. So many of you have this yearning need deep down in your sad little souls to try and make people (whom you do not even actually KNOW) think you are clever.

It's so pathetic.

You'd better make way for the Homo Superior.

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Baron, what do you expect, it's a discussion forum not ebay.

I didn't say they have to be insane because it's a bodhran but because that if far to much to pay for one. Bliss is absolutely right.

" There would be plenty of people who would say anyone paying $______ for __________ (insert any instrument here) would have to be totally insane."
-crap.

# Posted on July 29th 2009 by bogman

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

That statement is not crap, Bogman. It's absolutely true. People that do not play music of any kind would be inclined to say whatever you paid for your instrument is insane.

And what do I expect? I know it's not E-Bay, but a bit of common courtesy and manners would be just swell. You don't like bodhrans...great, Who cares? You don't think anyone should pay a certain amount for a bodhran. Great...who cares? There are several makers of these instruments that have a waiting list of people wanting to pay that and more.

So there goes your theory. What other drivel do you have for us?

# Posted on July 29th 2009 by The Baron

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

What about some common courtesy and manners?
What I see is someone wanting to sell something, boasting, then becoming quite defensive, rude and otherwise awful.
Too bad you can't buy a sense of humor.

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Boasting??

Would you care to point out where I have boasted, wyogal?

Now, I'd call that a boastful thing to say.

Also I'd say it sounds like the words of a stuck up little jerk.

But hey - that's only my opinion.

# Posted on July 29th 2009 by showaddydadito

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

That's not boasting. That's an observation based upon the unwarranted disrespectful comments. It's also an observation I've seen dozens of other unassuming people on this forum make about a lot of the same people.

Who started the unpleasantries here? Certainly wasn't me. I'm reacting to rude and completely unnecessary comments.

I think you two need to go and look up "boast" in a dictionary.

On another more civilized forum, the following is a stated rule:

"It is against the rules of this forum to comment on the forum about the instruments listed by others or the prices posted."

Well, this has been my mistake. Although there is no such stated rule on this site with so many wonderfully pleasant and helpful people, silly old me just thought there might be a shred of decency among some of the folks here.

My mistake. You are all clearly better in every way than I am, and I no longer feel worthy to post comments and questions on this site. Please forgive me and excuse my foolishness in thinking I was a fit candidate for this great site.

Farewell.

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

I had to use a currency converter but an absolutely beautiful goat skin drum, tunable, from Eamon Maguire in Belfast is now $200.

A full size tunable drum, is $230.

These are top quality instruments.

I was merely suggesting earlier that due to the popularity of the bodhran in the USA perhaps they are vastly over priced in the home of the entrepreneur.

No humour was intended.

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Just had to drop by one more time and let you know that the bodhran has been sold for EXACTLY what I was hoping to get.

Apparently there are lots of "insane" people like me out there after all!

So now, I bid you adieu.

Any Yanks want to buy an autographed photo of St Patrick taken at the top of the hill of Tara?

# Posted on July 30th 2009 by bodhran bliss

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Does that mean there is more than one?

I thought I bought the only signed photo of St. Patrick taken at the top of the hill of Tara. At least, that's what the small fellow said when he sold it to me.

Anyway, how much?

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

You were conned last time. This is the genuine article.

For you, complete with a free gift of Brian Boru's personal shillelagh, a mere $440 dollars.

Here, you could buy about 3 good bodhrans instead at that price.

# Posted on July 30th 2009 by bodhran bliss

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

Conned? Again? Dang. I guess that's why you call me a Yank.

I think I'll keep the autographed picture I have, thank you very much. Might be worth more than 3 good bodhrans someday.... Isn't "3 good bodhrans" an oxymoron? ;-)

# Posted on July 30th 2009 by John Culhane

Re: FS --> Albert Alfonso Calfskin Bodhran

" Isn't "3 good bodhrans" an oxymoron?"

Not at all, at all. I have three pretty ones hanging on a wall. My husband has abandoned them in favor of a tuba. That's what I get for marrying a German who's mum has a thing for brass.
