Maybe I've fallen behind, but I never heard anybody make them sound so much like crunchy fiddle triplets.

Very cool,
Anyone happen to know the names of those tunes?

Re: Cool banjo triplets

I like her playing because her triplets don't distract me from the tune.

Re: Cool banjo triplets

Yeah, banjo triplets can start to sound like three quick hammer blows.

Re: Cool banjo triplets

The "crunchiness" is exactly what I don't like, in banjo triplets, as well as fiddle. I much prefer the more spaciously deployed triplets, and ornamentation generally, of John Carty, for one. It can be lightly done, and need not sound like hammer blows.

Re: Cool banjo triplets

I like Gerry O'Connor's banjo triplets. it seems like they fit into the music more smoothly instead of sticking out like the crunchy ones... ;)

Re: Cool banjo triplets

....how does he do that ?

Re: Cool banjo triplets

Too many triplets(crunchy, smooth or with peanut butter) mess the whole thing up for me. 'nice triplets ornamented with a tune' is what I hear.
I really liked the clip of Brian McGrath doing 'Mist Covered Mountains' that someone recently posted here. I thought it was perfect.

Re: Cool banjo triplets

to many, too few, just right - how can you tell until you hear it if it works or not?

e.g. Gary Peterson blitzes his tunes with triplets, quintuplets, "short bursts of tremelo" etc and it's fantastic
You wouldn't want to hear everyone doing that though - it just wouldn't work for them

Brona Graham - great triplets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPhe3bDJx1E&NR=1

I always enjoyed Charlie Piggot's playing, too. But I believe he had to give up the banjo years ago, after losing part of a fretting finger.
