"in flute playing, the elemental link between music and breath creates a dynamic tension of its own"
That's a daft lazy thing to write. It's like saying, "in running, the elemental link between legs and forward motion creates a dynamic tension of its own".
Or, "in cinema, the elemental link between light and picture creates a dynamic tension of its own"
I disagree Pat ( or are you being ironic ?) I feel these reviews are up to the usual S Longwinded standard.
I still have doubts as to the actual exsistance of Ms Long I wonder if she is just a name they use for flowery reviews written by anyone who is handy.
Supports my idea Llig. Anyone met her in person ? Not just a telephone call.
You can see it now at the paper . Editor asks who's turn is it to be Siobhan Long? Ok its your turn Pat write 500 flowery words on these two flute albums you dont need to listen to them just crib from the sleve notes.
What are you knocking SL for Llig? It was Conal O'Grada who came up with that daft lazy quote:
'Still, as Conal Ó Gráda says in Wynne’s sleeve notes, “in flute playing, the elemental link between music and breath creates a dynamic tension of its own” '
I did point that out. And as much as Conal O'Grada's comment is daft, and there's no excuse for allowing it to be printed on a CD sleeve, you'd still think a "professional" journalist could do better than to quote it.
I find myself perilously close to disagreeing with someone here. There is a link between music and breathing, just as there is a link between dance music and movement of the body. For example, when a fiddle player has ballsed up their breathing it does come out in their playing, even though there is no direct technical reason to do with the instrument for it to do so. And when they get it right then you hear that too - and I am not just talking about making sure you get enough oxygen! The link is just more obvious with singers and wind instrument players. Conal may have expressed it in a bit too flowery a fashion.
Breathing is pretty central to who and what we are - I for one would not like to do without it...

Recent flute reviews
Despite Siobhan Long's perception here as a reviewer I thought that these reviews were pretty concise and articulate.

Re: Recent flute reviews
In newswriting, the elemental tension between expounding and actually having something worthwhile to say creates a dynamic tension of its own -
And it is this pereneally annoying and frustrating element which can give stress to the rest of us.
Coffee...ahh.

Re: Recent flute reviews
To be fair to Ms Long, she's quoting from the sleeve notes.
(.... actually ..... come to think about it .... that makes it worse)

Re: Recent flute reviews
To be fair to SL, this article isn't actually a review of the two albums, but a general feature. There's a subtle, but distinct difference.

Agreed, llig.
One WOULD think a "professional" journalist could do better than to quote it.
