Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

The goal of the Fiddle World is is to provide a safe and non-judgmental place for fiddle music lovers of all walks of life. With over 800 members, most of them fiddlers, it's the largest actual fiddle-related social network devoted to fiddling, fiddle music and fiddle-making on line today.

I hope you can join us:

I'm not so sure about the non-judgmental part :/

Within a few hours of putting up some photos of myself I got some randomer saying I'm ugly and gay :-(

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

Sounds like a cult.

If it's so great, why does celticagent feel the need to promote it here with a bi-monthly post?

Hmm . . . Will's right - it does sound a bit like "come over to the dark side . . . . ."

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

I refer to a comment I made on http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/21960 in which I said:
"Out of curiosity I looked at the fiddle world website, and, like Will, I find it appalling. What is more worrying than the general content is the amount of personal information the site requires from anyone who joins - information which is apparently intended to be shared with other social websites (this is the significance of the "ning" in the website address - google "ning" for more info). Security implications are obvious."

I think we should send llig over there... He's a fiddler. And it would take care of their non-judgmental thing ;-)

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

So Adam Sweet (celticagent) calls himself the "proprietor" of the network. It's a business, then, not a purely social networking site.

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

From the wikipedia entry for ning:

"Ning has both free and paid options. When someone creates a social network on Ning, it is free by default and runs ads that Ning controls. If the person creating the social network chooses, they can pay to control the ads (or lack thereof), in exchange for a monthly fee. A few other premium services such as extra storage and bandwidth and non-Ning URLs are also available for additional monthly fee."

I'm going to hazard a guess that Adam has opted for the latter choice in the hopes of making a few bucks himself.

It doesn't seem like an inherently bad idea, but I'll confess that I balk at the idea of hanging out at a site with such an obvious self-promotional streak. It's a bit like being invited to join a session by That Guy that sells his band's CDs, printed t-shirts, baseball caps, thong-underwear, jewelry, and coffee mugs at the session table. He might say it's "all about the music", but the consistent merchandising seems to suggest that it's not *just* about the the music.

Alternately, if you're interested in ning, and if can bear the god-awful color scheme, there's Paul Bradley's network:

Which seems to have a few familiar faces...

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

Seriously, it is nice to hear that one hour ago 'Anna Mckenzie and Jessica are now friends' but I don't think it is my kind of site!

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

I thought it might be nice, but now they keep sending me updates I care nothing about and keep harassing my band's myspace page to have us sign up. It's getting annoying.

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

"harassing my band's myspace page" - looks like a consequence of the ning philosophy of sharing with other social websites.

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

I've helped develop networks in meatspace, and the best, most effective and well-used ones are always participant driven, not "owned" by any one person, and certainly not done for profit.

Re: Fiddle World - another place for fiddlers to enjoy

and this showed up on that vision thread by the same poster:
"(BTW, I'm looking for 3 more students. If you or someone you know lives near Amherst, Hadley or Northampton MA, please send them my way:..." etc.
