Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

The kind of name you have to explain over and over again.... but if you like to do just that, no problem.
I once had a boat with a name no one understood, got pretty tired of explaining it......

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

The Pink Tradillacs, Trad As Hell, Trad the Impaler, Trad and True, The Sad Lads o' Trad

Or, something with "Trad" in the name.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

If you think you are going to be around for a bit, my tip is find something people can spell and therefore search for online, to find where your gigs are or watch your vids on YouTube etc - something which is not too obscure in other words.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

I second Mark's and Henk's comments.
The coolest celtic sounding name in the world won't do any good if nobody can spell or pronounce it.
Trust me on this, my bands' name is "Cairde na Gael" and we are constantly spelling and pronouncing it for people.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

Pick a tune title that appeals-and that folks can spell and pronounce.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

I've found that band names that require footnotes and pronunciation guides tend to generate marketing problems.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

Close your eyes and randomly point into an Irish telephone book.

Repeat this process and combine the two names, then divide by four.

* Must be performed in front of a lit candle under a full moon on any given Sunday.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

Just pick the name of a tune you all like.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

I appreciate your suggestions, one of the main things I have in mind is to find a name that its easy for the people as you said.

We all like The Last Pint but is taken hehe...

More suggestions are more than welcome!!

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

If you all wore black you could be called "The Black Velvet Band" but you would have to wear black velvet shirts and that might not work out. Especially, in tough neighborhoods

I like the suggestion of a tune name as the basis.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

How about, "Jig Reel and the Slow Aires"

Just kidding!

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

I heard of a band once called "Free Whiski". That always tickled me. Imagine the pub advertised "Free Whiskey Saturday night at 7pm" . . . imagine the crowd!

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

I always like the band names

"To be announced"

and

"Performance Cancelled"

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

What about 'The Celtic Grandslam'?

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

I've got two more: "Pints and the Punters" or better yet "Punter's Pints".

And one last one "Fish & Chips". The pub ad would read "Irish music session tonight at half nine featuring Fish & Chips.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

The name should fit the personality of the band. Here's a few tune names you may want to try:

Shoe the Donkey
The Rambling Pitchforks
Over the Moor
Touzle your Kurchy
Drowsy Maggie
The Blarney Pilgrims
The Bucks of Oranmore

The list goes on and on.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

Ceoltoiri Cthulhu.

Ceoltoiri means "musicians" - I assume.

Cthulhu was an unspeakable abyssal monster in the works of H.P.Lovecraft, an early horror writer.

I don't think it's an Irish word or name. But if the language can accommodate names like O'Murchu, then why not Cthulhu? It's more or less the same, innit?

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

"National Health"

Either that, or

"Naked Coeds and Free Chicken Wings Tonight Only"

And there's always

"Elvis Presley"

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

Nicholas -- I've always wanted to have a band named The Miskatonics. We'd probably play New England contra dance music and the like. Old New England tunes such as The White Ship, The Silver Key, The Moon Bog and Rats in the Walls, as well as some Irish ones like The Festival, The Very Old Folk, and The Strange High House in the Mist ( this one has a Gaelic name, but I can't remember it). And a few old songs such as Two Black Bottles and Till a' the Seas.

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

hotwhistler i've a few ideas, but to get an angle on it, what's your line-up?

and, in considering a local / regional name, where roughly based?

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

How about: Tit for Tat or Biddy's Revenge

Re: Name for a "Celtic" Band

Keep it simple, you will get sick of a name that is too clever, cute, hard to pronounce, or requiring explaination.
