How much money do you spend on 'listening' to music?

A few comments on the Eileen Ivers thread made me realize how little money I spend on music. Seems I should support 'fellow musicians' and all that....being a poor, cheap bastard, however, I don't. My main thing is to learn new tunes and I don't listen to much music except when playing or in a pub or at a festival. Driving in my car I'm usually playing whistle so no need for CDs etc....

On average, about €1000 per year.

Re: How much money do you spend on 'listening' to music?

CDs - about 15 - 20 a year - total about €400
Concerts - about 2 a year - total about 50
Festivals - 1 or 2 - total 400, including travel, tickets, drinks
Travelling to small gigs - lots - maybe another 400.
In all I guess about 1200-1300 euro

How do you play whistle and drive? Surely that's extremely dangerous!

I can do 75% of 50% of those keys! But there's only a 10% chance of that...

Re: How much money do you spend on 'listening' to music?

I've got a Napster account ~12.00 USD/month and I can put as much music on my PC or my MP3 player as I can download or store. And, I've got a high-speed internet connection so I could easily fill gigs and gigs of space in only a little while.

However, I tend to focus on only one or two bands/musicians at a time. Right now, I've mostly got Altan, Danu, Comhaltas (Foinn Seisiuns), Matt Molloy, Patrick Street and John Whelan on my Sansa View.

Also, when CDs are discussed on this site I tend to download them (if available).

Oh, yeah ... I also go to about 4 festivals a year which probably costs between $200 - $300 (USD) including admission, food, gas and whatnot....

RockyRoader-Drive with elbows, whistle over the wheel. Baltimore city or beltway tie ups-use knees! If I could just figure out how to do it with the friggin' concertina!

Re: How much money do you spend on 'listening' to music?

I listen on line, too, and take suggestions from this site. But when I hear a tune I like I'm not interested in buying the artist's music. I'm interested in learning the tune or style etc... Even though the players are usually way better than me.

Re: How much money do you spend on 'listening' to music?

this site is getting to be an expensive habit. I buy three or four CDs a month - probably half of those are suggestions from this site, and the others from people I play with. We haven't had many Irish bands through here since our economy tanked, so I'm saving lots of money not going to shows
