Hi All.
I am thinking of buying a first concertina and was wondering does anyone have any views on the Stagi-W-15-LN 30 button Anglo Chromatic Concertina. I have narrowed it down to this one as it is at the top of my price range, although I havent played one and will need to order via mail order. Any comments appreciated.
You''ll get more informed views if you post this query on the forum on concertina.net. It's been some years since I've tried a Stagi, but the general consensus of players is that Stagis are mediocre instruments that go downhill if you play them a lot.
For a starter instrument you are probably better off buying a Rochelle for half the cost, then saving up your money for a decent hybrid (Morse, for example) or a vintage instrument.
I tried one recently and it was not great. The air button was a stretch for the thumb. The rows of buttons were very close to the edge of the box. aagain a big stretch for fingers. The end blocks were very thick and made controlling the bellows quite difficult. The buttons were very small and very close together on each row.
Having said all that, the tone was not bad, but I'll keep my Clareman and our Lachenal.
Try it out first before you buy. Check out if your hands are up to the stretch.

To call a Stagi mediocre is a stretch...
