There's another comment a few further along about Shape-Note singing. I recommend anyone to find a recording of New Britain, which is the tune you ( think you ) know for Amazing Grace, with the original shape-note 4-piece harmony setting. Doesn't sound much the same, does it ?
I blame Judy Collins and Glen Campbell for all of this.
