The youtube was put there by "Wildstick" who is Spanish, so the session was probably somewhere in Spain.
I think - but I´m not sure - that Spain is the only country in Europe that still allows smoking in bars.
Smokin'? SMOKIN'? Come on guys, come on come on ... Get things into perspective fer christ's sake ... he was playing a feckin slow air on the banjo !!!!!
All of those guys in that original clip look and sound like they are completely out of it....get grungier and they'd have a hope of looking like Aussies at a session.
Good going!
Yes but, Bren, in actual fact there is no smoking ban to opt out of !
You can smoke in any bar, whether it has a "se permite fumar" sign or not.
Four years ago they made a law banning smoking in bars, but made the mistake of making it optional. The result was that nobody went to the handful of bars that banned smoking and they very quickly had to allow smoking again.
The law may still be in existence, but it´s a dead letter as regards a smoking ban.
It should also be remembered that the ban, in any country, is for the benefit of the bar staff, not the customers.
"It should also be remembered that the ban, in any country, is for the benefit of the bar staff, not the customers."
I'd believe that if the bans included health insurance coverage for bar staff. In civilized countries, that might be taken care of, but in the US there's no bar staff - or hardly any - with medical coverage from their employer, so most have no coverage at all. Anytime someone tells me they're sending some guy without insurance out to smoke in the rain, where he'll get a cold, and have to work sick, spreading disease, because he can't get sick time, all for the benefit of his health - well, I know that's someone who either hasn't thought this through very far, or else they're just feeding me a line.
When you add to this the recent news that nicotine levels in New York non-smokers are rising - thanks to the silliness of making smokers stand on the sidewalk where others have to breathe the smoke, rather than keeping the smoke confined to a room full of smokers - it really shows just how inane the smoking bans are.
As a non-smoker, I could have lived with a ban on tailor-mades.
Let the people smoke rollies!
They don't attack your eyes and nose in the same way, take longer to light up and they go out if left unattended.
I simply refuse to worry about nicotine levels in my blood caused by smokers on the sidewalk, or recalcitrant banjoistas
or is it banjoleros?
tailories probably have a lot less of the harmfuls than commercial cigarettes with all the chemicals and preservatives; and they mediate better imo.
Apart from that, don't smoke.
I think we should ban beer next. And soda. And French fries. And music above certain decibels. Certainly candy. Also any instruments that cause repetitive stress syndrome. Ahhhh! If only we could become dictators of the world. Too bad there is so much competition.
It is certainly true that fresh air now smells to me of tobacco smoke, with all those smokers out in the open.
Having a smoky bar is now going to seem a folk tale, like the one that London always used to smell of horses.
This No smoking in bars/session - has totally Ruined

WHAT A SESSION WRECKER -- jim,,,
Not smoking in bars is the best compromise for everybody. Those of us with asthma and allergies to such things can actually enjoy the social atmosphere now, as well as a few tunes, as can those who smoke. The only real difference is that those who choose to smoke go outside occasionally.
awildman - As far as I know, it's always been legal for bar owners to disallow smoking in their establishments - few did. Why? Because the ones that did, for the most part, did very poorly, financially. With the decline in smoking, that is changing somewhat, but when I was a working musician a non-smoking bar was an early night and a small paycheck, while the proper bars would keep us working until close and pay us well.
The unfortunate fact of the matter is that non-smokers don't drink. They might have a glass of beer now and again, but for the most part they don't drink enough to support a bar. So non-smoking bars generally can't afford to stay in business unless they operate as restaurants or as a sort of theme park for the college-age amateur drinker. A place to go and have a few pints and a conversation is becoming very rare these days, and it shouldn't be surprising when you see that you've limited the trade to a population that likes to be in bed by 10:00...
Few did so because the smokers would patronize other bars. A universal ban levels the playing field.
We've had a ban here for a couple of years now, and the smokers still go to bars. So do lots of non-smokers. I don't see that much has changed. I think we have a lower % of smokers than many areas, though. I'm sure that makes a big difference.
Ah, the bad boy/girl session, how I enjoyed those. Nothing like some git blurting out a couple of extra tunes onto the end of a set while you try to stay cool as the rolly starts to burn the lips thinking to oneself; can't spit it out as it's stuck, try drooling, quick.
One advantage of the smoking ban has been less need for subterfuge; "alright, I'm off out for a smoke". Gone is the old, "where's that resin"? "I've left my favorite plecky in the car".................................. Everybody outside smoking while only the bodhran player is inside giving it a solo complete with captive non smoking audience enjoying J2O's and that ethnic crazy groove.
"The unfortunate fact of the matter is that non-smokers don't drink."
I've got more money to spend on beer, as I'm not wasting it on cigarettes.
And most important to a non-smoker is that I don't go home with the small of other people's smoke on me.
There is a lot in what Jon K says, although I'm one of those non-smokers who made up for the others' lack of intake!
However there are so many other factors contributing to the slow demise of the individual pub that it's hard to separate the smoking ban effects. It seems to me from talking to bar owners round the world that smoking bans have decreased trade though, despite all the official spin.
There does seem in some places to be an increasing subset of musicians and punters who will come to a particular bar for a session, but not at any other time, and spend nothing or next to nothing while they are there. Whether they are also a consequence of the smoking ban it's hard to say
There are some musicians who will sit in a (pub) session all night without buying a drink, often they are American. Is this considered OK in the states?
I know a number of smokers who have not been put off by not being allowed to smoke inside. Having to go outside, to light up, has given them an excuse to toke. Medicinally, of course.
There's the irony, again!
Well The Proof is in the Doing -- Yesterday at our session just outside Larne,, When I went outside for a smoke { its was a Lovely sunny day - A rare thing now in Ireland mostly raining } All the musicians out smokeing did not want to go back in,,and there was far more fun Chatting outside in the sun...Did'nt want to play outside because or the strong sunlight ---- Almost Totally Destroyed the session a few times --- and for the Punters,,,
jim,
Absolutely... As a flute player, I'm glad of the ban. Even when I occasionally lapse myself and slip out for a fag. The amount of air I have to push through my lungs playing a whole night in a smoky bar means I end up with far more nicotine in my lungs than on a different night where I smoke, but don't play the flute.
And a flute that has smoky condensate in it is far more disgusting than clean condensate. Especially the following day when I take the flute out stone cold sober to practise. Even after swabbing out.

Spain is therefore the only civilised country in Europe. You can smoke in Amsterdam as long as it's not tobacco.

Bars in Spain are allowed to opt out of the smoking ban. Consequently many , but not all, bars display "se permite fumar" signs at the entrance door.
