What box is this?

What box is this?

What kind of box is this. C#/d or something else?

Re: What box is this?

My computer doesn't sync the video and audio too well, she's playing very fast, and the camera doesn't stay on the box for long stretches, so it's very hard to tell. But she's playing in F and B flat, which aren't easy on B/C and very hard on C#/D. My guess is it's something else. She could probably do it on B/C, but I doubt many other players could.

Re: What box is this?

Just a correction there Gary the first tune is F but the second one is Ab
I agree with threewood it looks like a Cairdin.
Only a suggestion but if it is tuned F/F# then obviously you could play in F on the outside row but the Ab tune would have the same fingering as a D tune on a B/C. The other not entirely impossible answer is that she is playing them on a B/C.

Re: What box is this?

From the amount of time she spends on the inside row I'd say it's a B/C.

I've always found F pretty easy, Gary - not sure I know anything in Bflat, but it's only one more flat after all...and she is one of the most talented boxers around.

Thanks for the clip, T. Two of my favourite Phil Cunningham tunes; Moving Cloud and Jean's Reel if my fading memory serves me correctly. Even if the video made me feel a bit seasick... :-)

Re: What box is this?

Right, Eno. F isn't intrinsically hard on B/C, since it's the same as G on C#/D, which has to be easy otherwise the C#/D wouldn't have caught on. I guess my statement was from the point of view of someone who learned on B/C to play in G and D and doesn't get a whole lot of practice (comparatively speaking) playing in C and F. But A flat would be a bear!

My guess is that it's D/D#. The F tune would be like playing in D on a B/C and the A flat tune would be like playing in F on a B/C (equivalently G on a C#/D). And D/D# is probably a distant third behind B/C and C#/D in terms of the number of boxes around.

Re: What box is this?

In some other pictures of Sharon Shannon, she plays a Cairdin. And in other recordings she plays a D/D#, so that should be the answer...
