Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Hey, that was....er....I, um, well...that was really....um, er....uh...

What exactly was that? I know it was Caoimhin and all, and he's a fine fiddler, but what was he doing there? I hung in there for 3 parts, eagerly expecting...something, but got nothing. I saw him playing with some techno toys and talking about his plant that is all full of leaves after only two weeks. Then he recorded himself picking two fiddles at the same time, then looped it back while he noodled around over the top of the recorded plunking.

The real funny part is at the end of the 1st or 2nd clip where he just diddles on those two notes for like 30 seconds, then stops and starts laughing his behind off because he's knows he's just tossing around.

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Ha ha, I love it when the word filter makes me sound non-American. "Tossing" indeed.

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

I enjoyed the music, but only as a background - and I'm waiting for somebody to come in with "What's this got to do with Irish/session music?"
Bollicking around, maybe SWFL?

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Any of those will do, RockyRoader, same effect. ;-)

That's exactly what it felt like. I felt like I shouldn't be watching, like I opened the wrong door by mistake. "Oops! Sorry about that, carry on!"

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

The word on his myspace is that himself and Mick O'Brien are working on a follow up to Kttty Lie Over.

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Well I liked the videos. I am listening/watching the 5th one just now.

The point, as I see it, is not just the music. It is not like someone filming themselves quickly at home to stick up on youtube. The whole piece is a nice bit of arty filming in a nice room with soft lighting and good camera work. The music is great stuff and really highlights the instruments. It is a soudscape that fits with the film.

If you have not seen 4&5 yet you need to for the instrument alone.

Altogether fantastic stuff that could have only been improved by some good bodhran work! :-)

I like MacDarra Ó Raghallaigh better

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

He plays flute, whistle and pipes too apparently -- I'd like to hear what
he does on those instruments. Playing plain old ITM he's mesmerizing -
this stuff is pretty special too - Brian Eno territory - I won't ever be
playing it but nice to listen to.

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

What a bent looking fiddle in 4 & 5! What a bent guy! I love it. It's not trad but It's not meant to be. The hardanger stuff is good too. I want one of them.

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Is that an octave violin in the last two clips (the fiddle equivalent of the octave mandolin)? I've heard of such things, but never seen one.

"He plays flute, whistle and pipes too apparently"

...not to mention a 1st class hons. degree in Theoretical Physics. I've heard him play flute and whistle - very nice. Never yet heard him on the pipes, though.

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

It's a five string non-electric fiddle.

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Hup - I thought just the same when I heard this last night - very 'Fripp/Eno'.

It's the kind of thing they play when you go to visit Cesar Manrique's house/museum on Lanzarote, looking out on to the lunar-type landscape of solidified black lava.

I think you'll find it's one of these:

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Presumin Ed is right. I saw Caoimhin perform at a house concert near Portland early last year, just after he had taken delivery of the instrument. He performed on it a bit. Great instrument. And its maker was in the audience.

HEY!

What style of music is that in the first video?

# Posted on August 25th 2011 by fiddlelearner

Re: Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh

Apparently it's his original composition. But the Hardanger fiddle is Scandindavian of course, and the tune sounds perhaps influenced by that music. (But then, I'm no expert. Perhaps one will chime in, eventually....)

fwiw, here's my favorite Scandinavian clip:

What do you think? Somewhat similar, in style?
