A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Hello!
I'm following very interesting threads on this forum.

To better understand what do you think about tradition, i have some questions to ask, in the form of a simple, maybe a little stupid, poll:

You go for a holiday abroad, and you find some pubs where they organize a session. Locals musicians there show some bad and some good points, like everywhere. What do you prefer among these choices:

1) Musicians who dress and behave like they were true irish people, drink a lot of beer and play like italians.

2) Musicians who don't know quite anything about irish habits, wear common italian dresses and drink a lot of italian wine (someone drink fanta, someone don't drink at all), but play a music not really irish, but nice to listen to and with a light irish taste.

3) Musicians who look like irish, say they play irish music, but generally play their own music, some jazz, some occitan music

4) Musicians who, rather than playing different from what they are and feel, sit and keep their instruments in their bags..

5) Musicians who prefer to wait for their next lives to have their rebirth in Ireland...

Thanks to everyone who will play this game, and to people who will find this game too silly to play it... :-)

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

1) I love it. Italians that dress and behave like they were Irish. I'd love to see that

2) Musicians who wear Italian dresses who are nice to listen too. I love that too

3) Musicians who look Irish. I don't really understand that one.

4) If a musician thinks they are comfortable with what they don't know, they are an idiot

5) there is no next life, make the most of it now.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Wow, are these the only options? How about look and act how you like and play what you want? If you tell me it an Irish session I'll expect jigs and reels though. ;-)

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

If you're on holiday in Italy, why would you go looking for an Irish session? Far better to seek out the local tradition and experience something new.

here, here - last thing I want when on holiday away from the Tír Mhathair is expecting to hear Irish trad - Tarantella's please,

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

I like to hear nice the nice music option, but I'd be weary of the lunatics trying to dress like irish people, whatever that may entail :)

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Oh my, oh my.
Like others here, if I went to Italy I'd be mad keen to hear some lovely Italian music, of which there is a collosssal amount. Don't think I'll be hearing any authentic Greek music in Corfu this summer though...
Anyway how do Irish dress, which is so different from Italians, apart from the fact that most Italians dress so much more elegantly than almost all northern Europeans? (Apart from the dead gallas Glaswegians, of course, 'n'at, know, see you big yin.)

oh yeah and drinking. Assuming you think Italians drink differently from Irish, this is how vodka is consumed in Belfast

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

1.Great! Especially when it is in New England, USA.

2.Fine, so long as there is a zampogna playing for the hornpipes.

3. Fine, but they have to bring sheet music and their own music stands.

4.That IS a rare kind of honesty, don't you think?

5. Definately not - hang 'em all high, and the sooner the better.

6. Forty-two.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

The last time I went on holiday a broad, my nylons snagged at the baggage check in, my mascara ran in the heat, and I broke a nail. All before boarding the plane. Then the stewardess ignored me while she flirted with the hunk in the seat behind me. And then, at the resort, I just couldn't bring myself to wear the new string bikini I bought special for the trip, so I stuck to the trusty old one-piece with the skirt. Came home with ugly tan lines. Honestly, I don't know how women do it....

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

we drink a lot of red wine at our sessions - especially Italian wine. So is the whole "when in Rome" thing out the window now that it's a new millennium?

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

@llig: point 3: look irish is like the ones in point 1... point 5: it depend on one's opinions.... ;-)

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

I always appreciate a musician who prefers to keep his instrument in his bag.

I don't mind also Italians who try to pass for Irish, as long as they are less than 17. This sort of immaturity is difficult to bear otherwise.
And certainly I would prefer a 17-year old Italian girl trying to pass for an Italian than trying to copy Irish. Call me old-fashioned.

On a more serious note: I am deeply distrustful towards people who play this music not because they want to play this music, but because they want to copy certain idealized cliche, and treat it as a piece of their image. Most of times, their approach is superficial and there's no real understanding of the music there - it's enough to look leprechauny and get attention of girls with similar personality problems.

So, I much prefer French or anyone else, who drink German wine, or anything else, dress like Romanian engineers/Madagascarian rollerbladers/US soldiers and play gypsy jazz, or anything else, with a condition they play it well.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

@ SWF Fiddler, these are the options....the pub is a so called irish pub and the session is an "irish session"....;-)...but the music you find is like the options described.....
@ skreech and iwerzon: i agree with you, even if your going out of the game...i wouldn't come to ireland and look for spaghetti al ragù ;-)

@ will: i'll never share an hotel room with you, i suppose....;-)

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

"....dress and behave like they were true Irish people..."?????

What the hell is that???? How do we generally dress and behave differently from anybody else??
Mighty strange..........

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

@ Thistle Day: I'm sure italian and irish drinks are different...you drink superlative wines and we drink perfect beers----when imported......;-)
eastpole: I agree with you.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

The drinks are different? The food is too, I think, a tad.

Dennis - Don't you all wear flat caps? ;-)
Honestly, I agree with Janek Eastpole about this superficial image-creating thing.
Now Sergio, couldn't you be more precise about where to go and see the types of musicians you mentioned in Italy? :-)

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

yes, of course, as above...
i don't know if it is served "agnolotti con burro e salvia" in ireland... or maybe will harmon prepare them home made???

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Hello!
First of all, i apologize for my poor and wrong english....
Coming to the serious side of the game I proposed....
I was amazed by the EastPole note: under 17 ys it's ok, over that age, you're an immature....i totally agree, even if in my case i went on until i was 23, playing guitar trying to imitate James Taylor, his voice and his style....i just wanted to talk about the sin, and not about the sinners.... then i realized that being-james taylor-like, wasn't in my possible landscape...and not useful to my personal growth....

There is in my country the tendency to throw out of our gardens every things getting old, maybe out of fashion, not in line with the neighbour's last achievment....

This is the opposite of preserving traditions...but since we are fascinated by foreigner's culture, suddenly we get and assume them like ours.... So, confusion is the result.

Shortly, we think we can buy even others' culture....and if possible, resell it like genuine traditional....

I personally think that preserving your culture is your business...and our (foreigners) possible "mission" could be just to understand, learn and trying to express it as we can, being aware that we won't ever be irish or scottish, and that using the term "irish music" we should be very, very careful. This could be a shorter way to destroy, rather than respecting and helping...possibly an easy way to attract some fans, lying about our essential nature, and about the real irish culture. To respect others, we should know ourselves, first.

This is just my opinion, and hope this doesn't offend anyone..

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

my mistake: (cut and paste..) "i just wanted to talk about the sin, and not about the sinners" has to be read at the paragraph end...sorry :-)

Hello, LoWhistle.
Do you mean irish sessions? I really don't know......or are you still playing the game ?? ;-) I think you could ask to Guido Gonzato who is a whistle maker (probably you know him, he makes Low Tech Whistles) living in Verona. If you need i can send you his email address.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Ah, LoWhistle...i was told by fiddlemax there are sessions regularly in Milano (if it's on your path, Milano in September is not so hot so it could be a chance to play there...). You can ask directly to him, he's a session.org member.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Most Italians own more than one suit, capisci?

And let's not forget to break out the "good" tweed when dining out in any of Italy's finest Irish cuisine establishments.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

I think the entire premise of the poll is kinda strange.

For one, I don't know how non-Irish people could "dress and behave" like Irish people. What sort of clothing is "Irish"?
The only thing I can think of is a GAA shirt, Irish national rugby or football/soccer shirt, or maybe a Guinness shirt.
But in a way, wearing such just shows support for whatever sports team is represented. For example I see asians wearing Manchester United shirts all the time: they are MU supporters and I'm sure that they don't imagine that putting on that shirt makes them English.

And how does one behave Irish? Talk in a phony Irish accent I guess.

There are Irish sessions all over the world where people gather to play Irish traditional session music. I would think that the music is the focus because the music is what brought everyone together.

We perhaps should not assume that the equivalent of ITM sessions occur in all other ethnic groups. Do Armenians the world over gather in Armenian pubs on Sunday afternoons and sit around playing Armenian folk dances (without dancers) on traditional Armenian instruments? I don't know.

I do know that I live in a place (Greater Los Angeles) that has enormous immigrant populations from a very large number of countries, and I don't recall coming across the equivalent of ITM sessions in ethnic groups other than Irish.
I do know an American guy who married a Persian woman and he said that some of her relatives get together in somebody's house from time to time to play traditional Persian music. But as far as he knows they don't gather in public in a format like an ITM session.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Oh I forgot to mention that I know a Persian guy who is very good at playing one of the Persian traditional string instruments (I don't know what it's called) but also plays guitar.
He and some of his fellow Persians living here get together from time to time and play... jazz.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

hi tom/LoWisthle.
i actually dont know whether there are sessions in the area of Civitanova. i'm aware of many held in Rome, some in tuscany (livorno), but most of them are in the north, particularly in Milano area. if you have the chance to be in Milano or nearby, just let me know and i will be pleased to have you with us. btw: as far as ourselves... we dress like italians, we eat/drink like italians, our language is italian and.... we do play irish and other trad music but....i'm afraid our music accents are italians .. . better that, thought, than imitations of something we ar not, we will never be and... we dont want t be! lol

# Posted on June 22nd 2009 by fiddlemax

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Sergio and Fiddlemax, thanks for the info. I won't be going north of Rimini. We have a family wedding in Civitanova, and will be spending all our time around family there. I would love to get to either the Rome or Milano on my next trip. I don't know whether or not it matters, but I am a Chicagoan of Irish descent married to a woman of Italian descent. We are both first generation Americans. I love the ITM, she hates it. Not so much the music, but because all I ever want to do is centered around ITM.

Re: A little (maybe silly) poll for traditional musicians here...

Hello you all.
My poll was a game, but under the game there was some interesting (to me) things i noted when i approached to "Irish" music here in Italy.
Some people seem to give more importance to the look than to the substance, here like in other part of the world.

I'm not a judge, but i had to meet people and to see places, before becoming aware that i was in front of images and not real contents.

While i listened to someone (italians with no doubts) whose sound was at a very good level and you could say they were playing irish music, i also got in touch with people who gave more attention to their image than to how they play.

The "irish look" i mentioned is something that can be just recognized as a stereotype, of course.

I think italian people are recognized in a stereotypical way by many. Once i was in a colorado supermarket, and i saw some Italian spaghetti called "Mamma Mia".

We don't have such a brand, but "Mamma" is a word that recalls the italian sterotype, and "Mamma mia" is a stereotypical italian phrase. So, Mamma mia had to be quite surely an Italian Pasta Brand, even if it doesn't exist...

It' just a marketing tool, fooling people to sell some (quite poor in content) products, be it pasta, or dressings, or music.

I justy wanted to know what opinion did you have about this kind of things, that's all.

IMO, good music is good music, with no label needed.

Thanks, best regards...
