It's a pretty ordinary film in my opinion..Lots and lots of blokes running around shouting and shooting ..and the next minute ....mumbling in a thick Irish accent..
I looked forward to seeing this movie ,but was disapointed.....never mind, cant win 'em all...
Traditional music was not much in evidence, except in the title, and hurley sticks certainly outnumbered fiddles. A powerful story, though, despite the melodrama.
Agree that the actual story is much more compelling than the movie version-but it does save the script. Decent movie, though. Well done cinematography. Very pretty scenery.
My problem is I have never found a movie I couldn't sleep through. This one took a couple of tries.
There's a monument to the guys at Rineen on the Ennistymon to Lehinch Road.
After all those people had to go through in the eighty years or so before the War, the deaths from famine, disease, arbitrary eviction to certain starvation, emigration...then had to fight that War...and they won. Mostly very young men, just as in the movie...just like all wars. Good on them for the winning of it.
I for one liked this movie and for once they used real Irish actors (Cillian Murphy) rather than some Hollywood star "blagging" an Irish accent. Tom Cruise in Far and Away springs to mind. I wonder which came first the song or the tune which bears no resemblance to each other?

My wife can't stand the star - reckons he's had a nose-job.
I gather another of our regular contributors had a part as an extra on this.

Ken Loach was always more appreciated in France than in the U.K. and elsewhere.

...the photo was taken in Kilfenora, probably outside what is Neylan's pub, so I'm told. Good sessions there from time to time.

A few sources on the song and the tune. The latter appears to be late C19 Scottish. The song, by R.D.Joyce, seems to have been sung to a variety of tunes, none of which has any relation to the reel.
