Up to about the mid-1990s we all thought in our house that Ron was the best thing since sliced bread. I was a folk club attendee on October 1 1993 when Ron, Miriam and their box-player (whose name eludes me) put on a four-hour performance at The Tree that has gone down in the annals of Bude history as the greatest show on earth. I still have a crude but brilliant recording of the first 90 minutes of it (the bloke with the cassette recorder only brought one C90 tape with him!!) After a few brilliant albums, including Dancin' to the Ceili Band and Galway to Graceland, he went off in the late 90s on a few collaborations, none of which lasted long, and then he seemed to disappear into academia. His fairly recent four-CD musical potted account of the history of Ireland, alas, did not regain the earlier musical heights. A supernova who could do with a miraculous second flare-up!
I seen him live in The Cosy Corner Bar in Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim, a few months ago. The bar is run by Rosie Stewart and husband Joe, Rosie released her new CD there last night but unfortunately I couldn't make it.

He's in the Eircom phonebook too, but under his proper name (add 'gh' to the end and think of the Blackwater) - http://www.eircomphonebook.ie.
