Bristol Riots?

Bristol Riots?

Well, they have just elected the Lib Dems, but that's not it....

I was given this jig last night, in a set followed by Captain White. Can't find any reference to it (Google, thesesh DB, Fiddler's Companion), yet I have it in my hand in black and white- so, to that extent, it exists.

I assume the title refers to this:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Riots

The tune is in 3 parts and begins: G2G D2d|EFG A2F|G2G d2c|BcB ABA

The Rev's ABC search suggests (58% chance) Beer 'n Tobacco, which would fit with Bristol :) but the dots don't match.

Any ideas?

Re: Bristol Riots?

With that corrected, the Rev gives a low probability Donal O'Connor's

Re: Bristol Riots?

I don't think I know it but it gives the impression of being an English tune, and there are a lot of them from the 17th c onwards. Sorry I can't help further.

Thanks, Trevor. In case anyone might recognise it despite the name, here's the whole jig (excuse the abc)

Re: Bristol Riots?

Thanks for the full ABC. I've played it through and it confirms my guess at its English origin. I still don't recognise it but I'll print it out and pass it round my English session to see who salutes.

Re: Bristol Riots?

That's very kind- hope it rings some bells.

Re: Bristol Riots?

P-K, I've sent an email to the editor of the William Winter Collection (wherein I thought I might have found the tune, but didn't) asking for his help - he knows an awful lot about English music. I might be seeing him at the English session next Tuesday.
It's a great little tune. When its name and origin are sorted out you must post it in Tunes.

Re: Bristol Riots?

Further information - an experienced box player from Warwickshire whom I met today when playing for set dancers believes it is an old Gloucestershire tune, but wasn't able to identify it. Apparently, there has been a resurgence in recent years in the playing of those old tunes. This seems to narrow the field a little.

Re: Bristol Riots?

P-K, my Tuesday English session mainly drew a blank except that the editor of the Winter collection considered the tune had a definite 18th century feel and could be one of countless jigs published by, for example, Thompson. He also directed me to a tradtunes discussion group at folkopedia.edfss.org run by Johnny Adams where the members swop info re tunes etc. I'll get back to you when I can.

Re: Bristol Riots?

Trevor- many thanks again. On my side, I'll try to see if the person who put the set together knows anything about the origin.
