Double Violin Cases

Double Violin Cases

Hi, I'm looking to buy a violin case that fits two violins. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Is the internet the best place to look or should I just go to a music store in town?

Thanks

Re: Double Violin Cases

As you're based in Manchester you could always try Paul Ayres' shop in School Lane, Didsbury.

Re: Double Violin Cases

I think he was actually looking for advice on the "best place", rather than "any place".

I've had a couple double-fiddle cases over the years and seen a good few more owned by others. It really depends on what you're looking for, and how much you want to spend.

I have a Bobelock myself, but I'm not particularly excited about it. It's quite large and tedious to travel with (even more awkward to pull out at a crowded session), and the fiddles and bows feel like they rattle around in it a little more than i think they should, though it's still WAY better than the case I had before (I think it was a Guardian, but I'm not certain). I've seen a fellow in town with the BAM double-case, which looks like it would do a good job of protecting the instrument, but I have a hard time getting past the fact that it looks and feels like nothing more than a couple pieces of molded foam.

If you don't care about suspension (you probably *should* care about it if you have reasonably nice fiddles), then the Canadian model seems like it would be a nice tidy size.

All the same rules about buying on the internet apply (greater selection, better prices), but I'd still recommend trying one out at your local shop first, just so you have a decent point of comparison of the physical object.

Hi tone dumb harry, perhaps you should read my post again?

Biggus Dave, thanks for that I'll check it out, it's less than a mile from me great.

Georgi yeah I will try one out first at a shop to get a good idea, thanks for the tips.

Re: Double Violin Cases

I've seen a double case (sorry, don't know the name) which was designed so that the two fiddles were angled to each other, the result being that the case was nothing like as wide as you'd expect.
I believe double cases for violin + viola are available.

Re: Double Violin Cases

'Carlton Cases' do them (or certainly use to) but at a price _ but a strong lasting workhorse as endorsed by Aidan Burke

Re: Double Violin Cases

Yes,LH-I was on the hunt for a vln/vla case a few years ago and they do exist 'off the peg' so to speak.Sadly, the viola I have is too wide a fit so I gave up in the end.

You can order a bespoke combo but it's fairly pricey.Still,if the right horse wins...

Re: Double Violin Cases

Here's my advice. Don't get one. They're expensive and you'll be kinder to your body taking one in each hand or one in your hand and one on your back. But maybe it's the right solution for you.

Re: Double Violin Cases

Hi
I bought a double violin case for a single trip to Germany some years back, which I was just going to put on ebay but thought you might be interested.
It's a really nice case in excellent condition. High quality, Korean-made, but no brand name on it. It's navy, with music pocket, handle and shoulder strap, green plush velvet lined.
I bought it for £200, will sell for £90 plus p&p which I haven't checked out yet. Please contract me via my band website if you're interested www.skyhookmusic.com, I'll send you pics, dimensions etc
