Where did it go

Where did it go

Does anyone know what happened to "Richard Robinson's tune book"?

It was a great web site for tunes, now I can't get it any more.

Re: Where did it go

dunno, but, altogether now , waltz time, 2,3: "why do you need the dots if you've got the recording?"

Re: Where did it go

It's simple, really.

Some of us weren't lucky to have been brought up with a fiddle in our hands.

I caame into music late in life, I haven't quite got the ear that lets me pick a tune from the air. Blessings to those who can.

I read dots, memorize, then have fun and improvise a little. I've only been playing 8 years, it takes time.

However, I am a crackin good restorer of violins.

But, this is why I need dots.

Re: Where did it go

Fiddleshed,

You don't need to explain to anyone why you want the dots.
I'm so sick of this. This site used to be about helping one another. If someone asks for the dots and you want to point them in the right direction do it. If not shut your mouth.

Re: Where did it go

Mary, thanks for your input. I point people to the dots quite often.
Cheers!

Re: Where did it go

Poor old Dots.......I'd hate to be a Dot !
I quite like them though, the dear old fellers....

Re: Where did it go

I always type with my mouth shut Mary.
I was also rehashing an argument that appears on here so frequently it's become a parody.
Which is a bit unfair to those sensible people who don't read many discussions on here, I admit.
If I really didn't like dots I wouldn't have provided the links that I did.

Re: Where did it go

"This site used to be about helping one another."

Ah, but is it truly helping someone, dear readers, to assist a fellow musician's descent into the corruption and failure of horrible dot dependancy?

Can no one save these people from themselves?

If not now, when?

If not us, then who?

How long will we allow this to continue.
Oh, the humanity...
;-)

Have a grand day.

Re: Where did it go

Thanks for the support. There are some sensitive players out there. Great.

Another reason to get dots is that more musicians that make recording rehash the same few tunes over ad nauseum. I have found, and love to play many older tunes that have either been forgotten, are too difficult, or greatly altered over the years.

I don't play sessions. mainly because there are few in my area, also because they always play the same tunes. Not casting aspersions, I just like other tunes.

Cheers

Re: Where did it go

Bren, my comment was not directed at you, I understood your comment to be a "parody". I was simply making the point that you don't have to explain yourself to ask a question.

I just don't see why people feel they have to comment negatively at every opportunity. If they don't like what's being said they should read the thread and move on. I've been with this site for a loooooong time and have asked questions to which I've received wonderful help and suggestions. But lately I'm almost afraid to ask for fear of being made to look stupid for asking.

Re: Where did it go

Oh, drivel. I love the craic, almost as much as the tunes. I don't agree with a lot of what's said, but if it's said well, or with humor, isn't that the point of a forum? Change and it will become just as dull as the fiddle websites I don't bother reading anymore. Information with spice, or sarcasm, or wit will keep up participation. Carry on, lads (and lasses).

Here's where I thought it was but now locked:

As to dots, all the dots I have came from me. From listening. But I don't play with them. If I can steer you to some I will.

Thanks again to joesmith ;)

Richard Robinson sent out a notice which is circulating online;

" Having just received another email about this, I suppose it's time to save some people some worry.
My web collection, late of www.leeds.ac.uk/music/Info/RRTuneBk appears to
have stopped working. It's not the fault of any individual's setup, as a few people have asked, it's something that has been done at the server end. The site just no longer responds, to anyone. Nor does the account I used to have there. Nor, so far, have the admins when I mail & ask them what's up.
So, I can hope to be wrong, (and it would be rather a shame, just a few months short of its 15th anniversary), but the best guess would be that
"Richard Robinson's TuneBook" is dead. Long Live TuneBook Live! http://livetunebook.qualmograph.org.uk

It's not ready for prime time, of _course_. But at least it's there, it has all the tunes that were on the previous site and many more besides, and I have root on it.

I have no way on earth of contacting all the people who might look for the old one, so I'd be grateful if people could pass this on as appropriate. "

Re: Where did it go

To clarify,

Richard's old site was a static collection of tunes he'd transcribed. His TuneBook live is a more interactive site that accepts other peoples' contributions. The vast majority of the content is his original transcriptions, but there is a handful of other people (such as myself) who contribute a handful of tunes each.

Re: Where did it go

Hah! That should read "other people's contributions". Although "other peoples' contributions" might make for a more interesting collection...

Re: Where did it go

dots are fine so long as you ignore the time signatures. These are only a rough indication. Reels are not in 4/4 time except when played by orchestras. In trad playing the 8 notes in a 4/4 bar are not of equal time. I have no idea how to express the actual values as I read only poorly but the best thing is to get the notes and listen to a real trad exponent playing the tune if you can't learn by ear ab initio. I learn most of my tunes by ear but have not got any problem referring to written versions for clarificiation of difficult passages(which don't exist per lliglaehcim). These only really occur in modern tunes composed by the new generation of technically superior but possibly traditionally challenged players. I could go on but sense is deserting me with the vino. ciao.

Dots are fine so long as . . .

FWIW my approach to dots vs ears is this: ears 1st. Dots, or any other assist, later. Anytime this is reversed the ears become secondary. End of rant.

Couldn't helped noticing the name of lliglaehcim (sic) being invoked.
He does have useful comments, in his own way. Here he is sharing wisdom with his friend Luke ;)

Finally, I do hope some take the time to read a few of these comments by Jode, Zina Lee, & the usal suspects.
