Uilleann Pipes Fingering Chart?

Uilleann Pipes Fingering Chart?

I have a practice set for two days only so I need you to be quick. Can you recommend a website where I can see a good fingering chart? And how can you get used to that fingering after playing the whistle for several years? How long does it take to get used to it and be able to play something?

Takes years to be able to play something. It's not an instrument you can "get' in two days.

What SilverSpear said. It takes as long as it takes, but two days isn't enough time.

Re: Uilleann Pipes Fingering Chart?

Put your fingers on the shorter pointy bit. If is less effective of you place them on the bellows or bag.

And remember: You can cover all of the holes some of the time, and some of the holes all of the time. But you can't cover all of the holes all of the time. (Unless you have a straw for your beer.

Anything else I can help with, don't hesitate

Re: Uilleann Pipes Fingering Chart?

Sure, anything paticular you want to learn about Dave?

Todays top tip: try holding the bazouki with the strings facing *away* from the body. (unless you are facing into the wind and it is raining, as this will only fill the body of the zouk with rainwater)

Re: Uilleann Pipes Fingering Chart?

I don't think Pere is expecting to be able to play it in two days but there is no reason he cant play around with it for 2 days and see if he thinks it is for him. I am sure Feargal's finger charts will help with that.

Re: Uilleann Pipes Fingering Chart?

Basic on-the-leg fingering, the chanter only off the leg for bottom D:

D x xxx xxxx (off leg)

E x xxx xxoo (back on leg...all the following still on leg)

F# x xxx xoxx

G x xxx ooxx

A x xxo xxxx

B x xoo xxxx

C x oxx xoxx (or) x oxx xoox (depending on chanter)

C# x oxx xxxx

D o xxx xxxx

Second octave E, F#, G, A, and B can usually be fingered the same as the corresponding First Octave notes.

C in the Second Octave requires the High C Key.

This is only the most basic fingering. Some notes can be fingered four or five ways depending on whether the chanter is on of off the leg, or whether certain ornaments are played, or context etc.

But the fingerings above will get you started.

As you see, almost none of them are exactly the same as the whistle, but the basic notion is similar.

Re: Uilleann Pipes Fingering Chart?

I think the opening poster was quite clear, and making an absolutely reasnoably request.

My earlier post was intedned to be silly rather than sarcastic. If I'd had anything more helpful to say I'd have said it.

After posting it did occur to me that i do have UP finger charts in an Armagh Pipers club book, and in the wonderful "Whistle and Sing vols 1 &2".

These latter little volumes also contain charts for whistle/flute mandolin/fiddle concertina (forgotten what system) tenor banjo (cgda) button accordeon (b/c) and bodhran. That is in addition to lots of great tunes with advice interspersed. I obtained my copies about 15-20 years ago and I don't think they were newly published then. I think they may have been reprinted at least once since. They're a great little resource, unbeatable value as these things go.

Getting back OT: good luck Pere

Ps I lied about the bodhran chart :-)
