The tash my father bore

The tash my father bore

Willie Clancy week this year runs from the 4th to the 12th July. The question is how do I get back to Bonnie Scotland via the ferry without stumbling across a wild party with flags and suchlike or alternatively the aftermath of said party?

I do not really want to come back early, not least because I would want to go to the classes again this year. I am not aversed to taking a couple of extra days in the Republic and wait until it has dissipated but that might prove more tricky work-wise.

Suggestions? If I was to leave Miltown on the Saturday afternoon and head back North to make the ferry later on the Monday are there any suggestions of places/sessions to visit along the way?

Are there some ferries that might be better options than others?

My last enduring memory of Miltown last year was a painful ferry crossing back to Scotland and the subsequent migraine that lasted for a good long while - and I suspect that was a relatively quiet ferry.

Re: The tash my father bore

Can't help, but I can give you alternate lyric to the Tash:

Hash My Father Scored
(Michael A. Patterson)

It was gold and it was beautiful and it cost 2 pence a gram
He scored it on the ferry coming back from Amsterdam
He said it's just like Lebanese from the bygone days of yore
And when I can I like to smoke the hash my father scored

That green grass and resin so fine
It gives you a feeling divine
It would raise both the dying and the living
That green grass and resin so fine.

When my father died he left to me his house and all his tin
I opened the Good book and found a Kilo stashed within
And now when I'm unhappy and sometimes when I'm bored
I light a spliff in memory of the hash my father scored

That green grass and resin so fine
It gives you a feeling divine
It would raise both the dying and the living
That green grass and resin so fine.

But now the years have passed and gone and all that hash has flown
You can't get stuff like that these days I've even tried home-grown
But I can still remember how upward I have soared
Outflying British Airways on the hash my father scored

That green grass and resin so fine
It gives you a feeling divine
It would raise both the dying and the living
That green grass and resin so fine.

It was gold and it was beautiful and it cost 2 pence a gram
He scored it on the ferry coming back from Amsterdam
He said it's just like Lebanese from the bygone days of yore
And when I can I like to smoke the hash my father scored

But so does the guitar! Plus I would like to camp and have my car so that I can easily get to other sessions outside the main drag.

Re: The tash my father bore

it all depends..If its street disturbances you want to avoid, you shouldnt have any bother. Past few years have been largely quiet. If you want to be super sensible, avoid using buses, it is better to drive, stick to main roads. I assume you would be making the approach via Sligo/Fermanagh etc. Best idea is find out where and when the marches are scheduled for and try and get through before them. Good chance you wouldn't even run into any. Be aware of bonfire sights too, like the one just outside Newry. These can often be troublesome. If you plan your itinerary and stick to main roads there is no reason why you shouldn't travel on the twelth. Unless you are a heatseeker and shout Vote Sinn Féin out your car window in March oreintated surroundings. Better still, a burning effigy of Big KB in womans knickers and his white horse on the car roof wud be a grand job.

Haha.... No Cause reminded me today of the fun and excitement that was the Larne-Cairnryan ferry the day after Marching Day. He convinced me that heading home the Tuesday -- two days after marching day -- is the way forward. That is what I will be doing.

Re: The tash my father bore

I was in that same situation last year "NCFA". I went up to Kinvara on the Saturday, Westport on the Sunday, and dropped in past "Ptarmigan's" session in Co.Antrim on the Monday. Home Tuesday. "RonP" and family and I went back on the 13th about 4 years ago - never again. We can discuss this tonight in "Mennie's".

Re: The tash my father bore

Last year we left on the Saturday and ended up in Westport for the night, pitching our tent at about 1am by the car's headlights. There was then, effectively, a mad rush to the ferry on the Sunday as we misjudged how long it would take. Sure we made it, but only just.

It was a later ferry on the Sunday (13th) we caught and it was pretty rowdy. I was greatly disappointed with both sides of "the divide" on that trip.

Re: The tash my father bore

Good times were had by all.

I remember being depressed by all the children on that ferry. Bringing up the next generation of mindless alcoholic bigots (on all sides). *sigh*

If you can get off work till Wednesday, Ali, the Tuesday ferry is probably your best bet. They tend to be cheaper during weekdays anyway. I'd rather do that than schlep up from Holyhead. That would be a loooooong drive.

Kenny, you're in Mennie's tonight? It's a nice sesh. Wish I could get up there but still stranded in Edinburgh. :(

Re: The tash my father bore

There is a Dublin to Liverpool ferry as I said yesterday. Other than a longer ferry journey it would only add a couple of hours of drive time to the journey. I do not imagine I will make use of it though.

Re: The tash my father bore

I did some work up around the Slieve Gullion area in South Armagh a number of years ago during the week of the 12th. I have two abiding memories - the constant throb of helicopters overhead interspersed with the battering of drums wafting across on the breeze from miles away..

Re: The tash my bourgeois father bore

(on all sides). *sigh*..

The only people celebrate and insight bigotry on the 12th are the Orange Order and Black Preceptory, Not to mention Paramilitary marching bands.

I was greatly disappointed with both sides of "the divide" on that trip..

Was your lovely cosy bourgeios order disturbed?
I know enough intelligent peaceloving and tolerant people who have deemed it necessary to go out and riot. Stick to giving social commentary on what u know. As I previously stated, You'd be grand driving back from Willy Clancy on the 12th, . Ignore those who blow things out of proportion.

Re: The tash my father bore

Oi, Trucks, don't dare to presume on my attitudes, backround or anything else.

If you think a grown man in a Celtic top sticking a V sign up at an 8 year old girl through a window, just because she was wearing a Rangers top is acceptable then that is entirely your problem - and his.

Frankly I was ashamed to be a Celtic fan witnessing that!

I can do without a history or social studies lesson from an ignoramus!

# Posted on May 13th 2009 by No Cause For Alarm

Re: The tash my father bore

Celtic - Rangers .. If you think this issue extends soley to fans of a SCOTTISH (IE NOT IRISH) football team it would seem you are the ignorant one..

"don't dare to presume on my attitudes, background or anything else.."

Very indignant nO CAUSE, raw nerve? I don't presume your background. Just your attitudes. Your exasperation at "both sides" is typical of someone who hasn't a clue about the real issues at stake. If one side or the other is subject to a social injustice, at least have the guts to identify it instead of assuming people fight because they are some nasty sub species to the group with you belong "sighs". There are many issues in which the two communities unite these days. Positions arn't as polarized, but at least live in the real world. Abusive Celtic - Rangers fans are not the real world and represent a very small minority of the fan base , you eveN bear witness to this. It is you who is being judgmental in this case. What led to difficulties was your irrelevant 'disappointment" at both sides. Football was not mentioned previously to this, therby indicating a social commentary. Therby tarring alot of people with one brush..
Writing this seems pointless as I still have the distinct impression you have no clue. If you did you wouldn't have posted this thread..

Re: The tash my father bore

And if you had such a problem with that man giving the wee girl the fingers they why didn't you cover your face and hit him with a fire extinguisher - instead of feeling outraged probably whilst sipping a Gin and Tonic, copy of financial times in lap. Mental note of mentioning this on the session website about my thread The tash my father bore..

Re: The tash my father bore

Of course I do not think the problems extend solely to supporters of football teams but at the same time to pretend there is no "cultural" link between these two groups is foolish at best. Of course I am not tarring everyone who supports these teams with the same brush. That would be ridiculous and, as you say yourself, is proven false by me, for example. Frankly I would say the vast majority of the fans of both teams want nothing to do with the bigotry and division (although I recognise that it is easy for many of them to get caught up in as part of a crowd or after a few drinks).

I am well aware that the different communities in Northern Ireland are working and living much better together now than they have for many decades, if not over a Century. It is great to see how far the situation has progressed.

I am sorry if you feel tarred by a big brush. That was not what I meant. But there was a lot of hostility on that boat from lots of folk with drums, sashes, flags, Rangers tops and UVF tattoos. My attitude would be to try to ignore the bigots. I was disappointed when this guy, clearly out to find a fight chose to display his own prejudices in such a manner. What you should be asking yourself is if this 8 year old girl is to have a chance of realising that the bigotry is stupid as she grows older then the last thing she needs is a grown man being abusive to her because of her football top.

At the time I was out on the deck trying to find a small corner of the boat where I might escape the eedjits so no I was not sitting comfortably reading a newspaper and sipping a gin and tonic. I seriously doubt that anyone would store an image up for a year just to mention it on a website such as this.

Why would I hit the guy with a fire extinguisher? How would violence help?

And I posted this thread in order to get some sensible thoughts and suggestions about how to avoid a migraine due to the vast number of bigots I am likely to come across. I am sorry if you didn't like the thread title.

The idea that I could make it from Sligo to Larne on the 12th without hitting a parade on the 12th seems laughable at best. You can't even manage that in Glasgow when the parades are on.

Anyway - the problem is solved. I will return on Tuesday 14th.

Thank you to everyone else for the helpful comments.

Alistair

BTW Nice youtube link. Seen it before though.

Re: The tash my father bore

Oh and I am well aware of many legitimate reasons why people would take up arms for a cause throughout the World. This is however not a political forum so I am not going into it there. Should you wish to take this up off forum then I would be happy to share my views.

This thread was purely a logistical question about travel to and from a traditional music festival when there could be some difficulties.

Re: The tash my father bore

Larne!! You are indeed fecked if u travel on the twelth..I assumed Belfast. I take your point about leading by example where kids are concerned. As for violence never solved anything I disagree. I was being funny about the Fire extinguisher, but mabye a slap off a fellow Celtic fan would have had the desired effect in curtailing his behavior.
As for taking up Arms. That another matter altogether which I never mentioned or indeed feel qualified to talk about. Tunes maybe -Armed struggle -Nope. Never mind share views with you - No thanks. Being driven to go out and protest at sectarian marches going past your door isn't taking up arms. Its excercising your democratic right to protest..I dont feel tarred by any brush. I'm proud to live amonsgt intelligent people who dont take things laying down..In Scotland is is often noted that Sectarianism is much more vicious and arbitrary than here, maybe your attitudes are more a-tune to this set of circumstances. In any case "logistically" It would have been as quick for you to take a Dublin or Belfast Ferry route. Horse before the cart and all that.

Re: The tash my father bore

I never said violence didn't solve anything, just that it wouldn't have helped then. Firstly I was not in a Celtic top so unless Mungo was a mindreader (which I doubt) then I am not sure he would have taken it as a friendly redress. Secondly I seem to remember him being bigger than me! :-)

I wouldn't dream of comparing our two experiences of sectarianism. I am sure you would win hands down. I have been quite lucky with all of that. If I had a march going past my house I am sure I would be out protesting too. I can tell you are proud of where you are from and I fully respect that.

I don't know if it is true to say that sectarianism is more vicious and arbitrary in Scotland than the North of Ireland. In most of Scotland it is not really much of an issue at all. I would agree that in Glasgow it can be, or at least has been, quite pronounced (both football clubs deserve credit for working against it in the schools). I think it is also a lot easier to hold on to and waive these views around when you are removed
from the source of it somewhat. The consequences and the realisation of it is not necessarily the same this side of the Irish Sea.

I got a chance to see Belfast last year on the way down to Miltown and Armagh in November at the William Kennedy. They are both lovely looking towns and I would love to spend more time in both towns/cities in the future (although the police station in Armagh is fearsome!).

It is all moot now I am going to aim for a Tuesday ferry. Perhaps I will go via Belfast. We shall see. Dublin-Liverpool would be a much longer ferry crossing and would involve a longer , dull drive up the M6. If I am doing the driving then I would rather it was in Ireland.

Anyway, I sense the mood is lifting so I will away and watch your youtube clips now.

After which I might begin thinking about places to see on the way up from Miltown. The plan last year was Donegal and The Giant's Causeway. We were a good few hours short of managing that!! In the end it became a mad dash across The North, crossing the border at Lifford and finding the back road in to Derry and across the bridge before heading to Maghera and on to Larne making the (already rearranged) ferry by the skin of our teeth!

All suggestions of places to visit along the way would be most welcome!

"Being driven to go out and protest at sectarian marches going past your door isn't taking up arms. Its excercising your democratic right to protest."

I agree with you, man, but the thread was about how best to avoid a bunch of drunken eedjits on a boat, not about exercising your democratic right to do anything, other than not be annoyed for a two hour ferry ride by drunks running up and down the decks screaming at each other and throwing things. It's a commentary on behaviour more than anything!
