Mustn't be authentic, since I've heard here on several occasions that there are no "bare bones", and that you cannot learn the tune divorced from the twiddly bits.

Of course you can learn the tune without the twiddly bits you daft fecker. Thats why she plays it without the twiddly bits. If you cant play the tune without the twiddly bits then how did she just do it ? Duh. You just want to insist on your 'rightness' even when wrong.
Its the traditional way, as I've been saying here since I got here. All the kids learn like this. then as they get better they add what ornaments they feel like where they chose. Otherwise how would the defining character of regional styles develop?
You can find many Irish players who dont ornament or do so minimally. Why not actually come over and see for your self if anyone doubts me ? I think Mary MacNammara still does whistle lessons in Feakle .
I dont mean 2 or 5 day workshops for 'trad tourists' but the basic foundation the kids get. Your argument to the contrary is shown for what it is in every school hall in Ireland.

Awful technique, overly tense, 'the claw', a common mistake not to be copied. Learn the tune, fine, not the technique, it will bring you sorrow in the long run...
While the generosity of folks offering lessons online is welcome, there are also folks doing it who are not promoting best practice, and not just as demonstrated here. Choose wisely what you emulate... Even better, whatever instrument takes your fance ~ get your start live...
Ceolachan, you're right there about the technique - now that I actually stopped to look at it (I had just been listening to the tune itself), the top hand seems to be in a very awkward position. Isn't that hand position something that a lot of flute players use though?

There are excellent video lessons which can be played at half speed outlining the difference between Clare, Donegal and Sligo styles on this interesting and very professional site which I found while trawling through youtube. http://resinandbow.com.
There's also a virtual 'session' and you can submit your own videos. Oisin MacDiarmada provides the Sligo style tutorials.
Hmmm...just checked out the resin and bow site--the "session" clips are nice enough, but the instructional videos left me wondering why the fiddler plays with so much vibrato, and why they didn't also provide more up tempo versions of the tunes with more sessionable bowing.
Also, the descriptions of regional fiddle styles is misleading at best. Nice idea, needs some serious work.
I'm having serious problems with resinandbow.com. The highest resolution available to me 1280 x 800, and I can't see the whole page. Changing zoom level does not help.
The videos won't play for me either, although I have the latest Flash player. There might be a clue in the text to the right, but I can only see a couple of letters per line, so I don't know what it says.
Ah, OK--put zoom back to 100%, go to Full Screen setting--now I see the icons I need to click, to get a tune. Well, the upper half of them, at least. No way to scroll down.
Maybe now I will be able to find a contact email to report the problems.... nope, don't see one. Must be at the bottom of some page, somewhere, I guess.
Problem solved--used Firefox instead of IE8.
The site is broken for IE8--no scroll bars. I was finally able to ferret out their email (resinandbow@gmail.com) so I'll let them know.
