Where has the fun and passion gone?

Where has the fun and passion gone?

I've been playing both violin and fiddle for 21 years now. I have occasionally looked at this site to find new tunes and have read some discussion forums. I can't help but to say that the "tone" of the messages (and I get that you can't "hear" someone's tone on a discussion forum) seems a little too much about "who can be the best trady" etc. What happened to having a passion for your instrument, the music and having FUN? I've played in all types of groups, and am currently in an, oh, my "celtic rock" band. I do this because it's FUN. I enjoy it. I love the music and my fiddle. The most talented players have fun and freedom of expression. Check the elitism at the door, please and go back to what made you all start playing the instrument and music in the first place. It makes me sad.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

I'm all for fun... I've been known to play Moroccan gnaoua and French reggae with my guitar, rock with my banjo & mandolin, and I've even used my whistle to play Latvian pop.

Needless to say I spend more time lurking here than posting... I would probably wind up getting burned at the stake under a full moon...

Haha. Me too, honestly. I'm a heretic at heart. I've been occasionally looking at the site for a couple of years, and I've just now signed up. Go figure.

Fun is boring.
The only fun thing around here is seeing how boring it all is.
And of course yes batlady the silliness has gone out of this site. It was the only thing that kept me sensible, but now it's gone this site seems...rather silly since everyone ties to act so sensibly and all posturing and strutting about like primadonnas....or was that primagravidas?
erm......NURSE!?!

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

OK then. let's get sensible. Who knows this tune?
This is me writing down what I am presently whistling:
Whoo Wha whoo-oo whoo who wha whoo who who wha.

Easy, you dumb arsed jerks. That was Trim the Velvet, first few bars. What's wrong with you people? I was whistling the bliddy thing.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

lol, thats why I dont listen too the radio much, it seems like nobody on there REALLY plays music because they love it. I agree with fiddlechick though, music and art in general should be for fun and because you love it not just to be 'the best'.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Mary, I think I said exactly that a couple of years ago. Other people by contrast seemed to think it had improved, the debates were livelier, there was just as much eejitification, but I declined to agree.
I remember a few years ago going off to "foreign" sessions, ie outwith my normal habitat, in Forest Hill - and someone out of the woodwork would come up and shake my hand, or quite often try to shake my hand off of my arm, saying such and such was a good craic remark, but don't ever again refer to my great grand aunt's pipes as a windbag, or I'd get invited to sessions out in the back of beyond in Kent, or even North London, which were in ditches and sewers, and I'd be lucky enough to be the only one there, on the strength of comments posted here, or people, complete with sawn off shotguns, would make pilgrimages down to the Blythe Hill Tavern, all the way from Brockley just to observe the phenomenon that was Key Maniac before taking aim.
Maybe we eegits should reclaim the discussion section. Why don't one of us start a stoopid thread. Only trouble is all the dingbats would be wondering how come there are more letters in them abc's beyond g. Or they'd try and sell you some craic.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Success ruins all, I guess. I used to spend time lamenting the old days, but the site is what it is, and there's no way to change it. With damn near 60000 members, there's bound to be some trolls and wind up artists. But there's still some good crack to be had here, but you have to forget comparing it to the old days, and take it for what it is.

And it's not all downhill just from trolls and whatnot, it's that we've discussed pretty much every single nuance there is related to the music. So the days of it being a wonderful learning experience for many of us has passed. We've learned much of what we can from the site, and we've reached new levels in our playing because of it. But the same old discussions still happen when new people wander in and ask the same questions we all asked in years past...

So I say stick around. Find new meaning in the discussions here. Maybe part of the reason that it's not as fun any more is because there are numerous old-timers that just lurk instead of being part of the fun! If you get involved again, maybe it will become fun for you again...

And maybe take the chance to pass on what you've learned, and help make it useful to the newcomers, instead of rolling your eyes and saying "oh god, not *that* topic again..."

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Classic internet forum complaint. Any forum about anything on the internet will contain this remark:

"It's not as good now as it was then!"

This is standard human behavior. Ask any elderly person if it was better way back when then it is now.

Yeah yeah. [yawn] I know, it was better then, it's lousy now, blah blah, feh & meh.

So, quit complaining and do something! Break out the funny hats and whoopie cushions! THBBPPT!

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Nostalgia about the past and bitching about the present is a ubiquitous human condition, whether you live in 1900 or 2009. I have a chapter full of people whinging that the late 19th century (when they were writing) really sucked and things had been so much better before industrialization, modernization, etc etc.

I don't think this website has deteriorated or is less funny. It's one of the only forums I check (and chiffandfipple, but I only really glance at the latter to see if there is any interesting news or oggle sets of pipes that come up for sale).

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

"Nostalgia about the past and bitching about the present is a ubiquitous human condition"

That's because things've been getting worse for at least a thousand years ;-)

First and foremost, we should get rid of political correctness. People start complaining about their "hurt feelings" when they have none.

Otherwise they'd just tell other people to get out of their face in the most appropriate way. Including "feck off". :-)

Cheers, everyone!

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Well for a start, everyone has different ways of having fun.
What you get out of this site is commensurate with what you put in. 'Bring what you expect to find ' old festival advice.
Its like players whining about tunes being boring! The tunes aren't boring its how you play them!
What do you want from this site and what are you prepared to offer?

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Your right fiddlechick7. When my parakeet sees me pick up the fiddle he starts bobbing his head up an down then joins in chirping when I play. He really gets into it, flapping his wings and jumping around the cage. He also recognizes the frist couple of notes to The Lark in the Morning. That one really gets him going.

If I say "do you want mommy to play you a tune" he starts his
antics, he knows what's coming. It seems fiddling is fun for all.

My dog however looks bored by the whole thing.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Animals are funny.

A friend of mine was putting his pipes in a case to head off for a gig. As soon as he picked them up, the cat fled the room as fast as it could run.

I was taking care of a dog for two weeks that started barking its head off whenever I started up the pipes. If the neighbors didn't already hate me, they surely do now.

My parents' cat couldn't care less. Neither could my horse. I was riding her outside while the neighbor was practicing his Highland pipes -- the horse wasn't bothered in the least.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

My cat always tries to climb into my lap when I'm playing. "Oh look, a lap! It's my chance!"

Then she usually gets an accidental frog upside the head on a down bow and quickly figures out that Daddy's not watching TV.

When you are as good as me (not) it's got to be fun! And we do play in the pub, which helps.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

I pop in from time to time, and stil find what drew me here in the first place... tunes, info, insight, drivel, "witty" banter, and invisible musicians (or canny algorhymic software) with a (somewhat) similar musical bent... all of which make tapping at a keyboard arguably more meaningful than doing ledgers.

# Posted on April 22nd 2009 by drone

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

Yes, mokingbirds aren't shy about experimenting with different musical forms. The local mocker has some, very limited, facility with Irish music. I still haven't heard him get all the way through one tune, or even a complete A part. Llig, you'd be proud of 'em. Mockers listen.

That's what she said. (Still the best character on episodic television. Sorry, Ricky Gervais—second place to you, originator. Third place: Patrick Star.)

The awful truth: sometimes, when one warms oneself up by posting on web sites built around one's sad interests before resigning oneself to allegedly (or, oh so) meaningful work, one does not always bring one's A game.

Ah yes, nostalgia for things that have no occurred yet. That reminds me of vuja de, the feeling that this has never happened before. Or dyslexic paranoia, the feeling that you're following someone all the time.

Re: Where has the fun and passion gone?

>"Nostalgia about the past "--
>Is there another kind?

I once read a description of the work of the author Robert Aickman, where it was described as embodying a sense of nostalgia for times not yet gone (when he was writing).

If you have read Aickman then this is actually a very perceptive description.

If you haven't, I highly recommend that you do. For the first time in many years he is back in print in paperback as part of the faberfind series of reprints. Admittedly not the cheapest paperbacks in the world. But take a look at "the wine-Dark Sea", "the Unsettled Dust", or "Cold Hand in Mine", three collections of (mostly longish) short stories, of the kind that Aickman described as "Strange Stories", all available via amazon.

A terrible old reactionary mind, I'd have struggled to agree with him on the time of day. But a beautiful writer.

This from an autobiographical book dealing with his early years ("the Attempted Rescue") wherein he discusses his father's "shadow":

"With most people, it seems to me, one can, in time and after experience of the person, discern and distinguish between the true entity, almost always kind and idealistic, though often a little child-like; and a Shadow which influences for the worse all the person's actions and opinions, and does what it can to spoil the person's life. . . . My father had a habit of which I have never heard or read the like in another, though nothing human is truly as rare as that. He would be in a room by himself, and something would go wrong. Perhaps he had lost a stud or his nail-scissors, or could not find a clean handkerchief or a suitable necktie. It could be anything. My Father, all by himself, would begin to make a noise: a throaty, gurgling scream of frustration, with a rhythmic pattern in it, like a man drawing a rough circle and continuing the line to draw another and another. . . ."

Once you listen to the tunes the sheet music becomes like shoe boxes full of love letters from ex - lovers.
The real fun begins when you take those shoe boxes out to the fire ring in the backyard, late at night, & let those sheets warm you up.
