Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

Can anyone give me some history behind "Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore"?

It's been a while since I've posted. Hope everyone is well.

Re: Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

Nobody else cares to or knows so here it is for ya!

The song is traditional, but may yet be claimed
author. The person said it originated around
Donnegal.

I suggested another one to go with it, 'Thank G-d
We're Surrounded By Water' you might like to play '
the Jig 'Out In The Ocean' as well. But you could
have played 'Buachail Ban' which is also a sea
tune as well. Ireland as you probably already know
has lots of nautical music, which explains to me
at least why sessioneers are always at sea... along
with a few drunken sailors..

'Way hay and up she rises ...'

...and so we'll play this next bit in the key of sea...please don't play that carp, because you know you can't tuna fish.

Re: Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

From Andy Kuntz' Fiddler's Companion at http://www.ceolas.org/tunes/fc/ there is some history of the tune.

I tried to post the history there but it didn't come up. Look up "shamrock shore" in the index.

Re: Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

Thanks a million. I first heard the tune from (I'll probably spell his name wrong) Robbie O'Connell and fell in love with it. I've talked my band mates into adding it to our list and thought it'd be nice to know somthing more about it.

Thanks again!

Re: Paddy's Green Shamrock Shore

For what it is worth - L. E. McCulloch in his whistle tutor listed the air to this song as 'The Green Hills of Gweedore'. It is a nice air - which reminds me I must play it again sometime soon.

...and Francie Mooney (father of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh) wrote a song to the same tune - "Gleantainn Ghlas Gaoth Dobhair" (The Green Hills of Gweedore)
