Not too long ago I handed this out to a bunch of my music students. They each said it helped them understand at least in part why they're so obsessed with music--that it helps them deal with feelings that don't fit easily into words.
If it helps people who are listening come to terms with their deep-seated feelings, that's no small thing. In our busy lives, a lot of people gloss over feelings or never let them surface. More and more research is pointing to this behavior as a cause of heart disease, depression, and other illness.
Essay is a bit over the top, but then again, isn't that one of the character traits that so many musicians share? I agree with his premise, however. Music has a power to move us that is hard to quantify or describe, but is definitely real.
On the first part there's an interesting book called 'music of the spheres' can't remember the author, look at Greek ideas about music as harmonising the person and the wider universe. Interesting as history of music and as metaphor
Yeah! Music's deeply important to me too but I can dig it without bleating on about the blooming skyscraper business again and all that Amerikan patriotic stuff...
Yuk!
Sentimental waffle!

Re: Interesting essay about the value of music
Before we get too puffed up about the value of our labors, we should consider that the funeral industry gives its people much the same peptalk.
