Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

Has anyone since the film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"?

There is a scene in the film where the Welsh guy fixes the radio aerial. Some dance music then comes on the radio - a reel, as I remember. The girls all start dancing to it - initially in the cottage, and then move outside and continue their dancing in the yard.

Can anyone tell me the name of that reel please?

- Thanks in anticipation ... :-)

As far as I remember all music for the film was writtten by Donal Lunny with Martin O Connor, Davy Spillane etc playing. I thought it was all a bit out of place.

It was - who else - Bill Whelan. You can listen to samples at

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info, kilfarboy and Henk Bos. :-)

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

... I quite liked that reel - although I'm sure that it was nothing like the music would have been played in the 1930s ...!

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

Thanks, Henk! :-)

Track 15 - yes, that is indeed the one ...

... and I see that it's called "Dancing at Lughansa"! - so I actually had the title all along, without even realising it! :-/

... now all I need is the abc .... or a score ... :-/

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

Q. Did Irish bands in 1936 have tenor banjos in them? .. :-/

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

They did in the 40's. Jim Ward of the Kilfenora Ceili Band was a tenor banjo player.

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

Michael Gaffney played the banjo to John McKenna's fluteplaying during the 20s and 30s. Billy Andrews had a banjoplayer on some of his 78s. The Flanagans... plenty of examples

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

Thank you, shanty and kilfarboy - so maybe more authentic than I thought ...

.. but it still didn't have that "1930s" feel to it ...

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

I agree with you it certainly didn't have that 30's feel to it. How do you capture that feel? Crappy recording equipment? :) I wish I could get a hold of that in my playing-I love it but it remains elusive....

Re: Tune ID needed from film: "Dancing at Lughnasa"

Yes, shanty, - but apart from the "frying chips" sound, I'm thinking that a lot a bands of that era would have included a piano in their line-up.
