Sessions in China?

Sessions in China?

Evening all. I can confirm that the yellow board is easily accessible to internetted Chinese - at least in Hong Kong and the South West where I am now (Chengdu, Lijiang, Dali, Kunming).

Does anyone know of a session or just interested players in the big cities in China? There's nothing in "Sessions", "Discussions" or "Members" that I can find.

Specifically I'm hoping for someting in Chengdu, Beijing or Hong Kong.

As a last resort - pubs with genuine ITM?

Cheers
Martin

Re: Sessions in China?

Hey Martin,

A couple of years ago I did a performance in Shekou (Accoss the bay from Hong Kong) in a new Irish bar:

They seemed to have the details of quite a few musicians in the area (including Hong Kong) so if you contact them... maybe they can point you in the right direction.

Hope this helps.

:o)

Re: Sessions in China?

There's a long-standing folk club and/or scene in Hong Kong - I imagine centred on British and other English-speaking expatriates. "Name" bands and musicians have gone out there from time to time. I don't know if this has included Irish players but I should imagine so.

Re: Sessions in China?

O'Malleys in Shanghai usually have hired Irish performers most nights and occasionally a mini-session can break out. Or such was the case when I lived there about 10 years ago.

Re: Sessions in China?

I took my whistle down to an Irish pub in Guangzhou a couple of years ago. It was called 'The Paddy Field' (The landlord from Westport claimed that no-one got the joke but I thought it was great). Don't know if it's still open, but of course there was no prospect of a session really.

I get to China about once a year, so if anyone finds a session I'll pack my whistle next time.

Re: Sessions in China?

I used to live in HK for a year and played a regular session in Delaney's in Kowloon and The Dubliner on mid levels in Whan Chai. That was in '02. I bet there are more. Contact Dan O'Reilly in (Scruffy?) Murphy's in Kowloon - he will know. Also look up Hong Kong GAA - I played gaa and lots of trad heads hung out there also. Folk Club scene also in Whan Chai - A pub called The Wanch I think.

Re: Sessions in China?

Hey thanks for all the tips - I'll give Dan O'Reilly at Murphy's a call when I'm there at the end of the week. Only passing through HK a couple of times for 2-3 days so fingers-crossed. I'm surprised Beijing has nothing going on, given its size and ex-pat community. Ah well, I'll learn a few new tunes by meself!

Sorry about my absence from the discussion - the net goes down for long spells where I'm staying.
